Gordon Cameron Jackson , OBE , (born December 19, 1923 in Glasgow , Scotland , † January 15, 1990 in London , England ) was a Scottish actor .

life and career

Gordon Jackson initially completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd. In 1943, however, he left the company and made his stage debut as an actor in Rutherglen, Scotland - without ever having completed an acting training. Therefore, according to his own statement, he suffered from severe stage fright all his life. Nonetheless, he became a popular actor in film and television.

Jackson starred in movie productions such as Mutiny on the Bounty (alongside Marlon Brando ) and Broken Chains . From 1971 he became known to an audience of millions as the conscientious butler Hudson in the television series Das Haus am Eaton Place ( Upstairs, Downstairs ), which he played in 60 of the total of 68 episodes, and was awarded an Emmy in 1976 for his role . From 1977 to 1983 he again played a leading role in the crime series Die Profis as head of the fictional secret service special unit CI5 (an allusion to MI5 ) Major George Cowley and superior of the two title characters Bodie ( Lewis Collins ) and Doyle ( Martin Shaw ). In the German version of both series, Jackson was dubbed by the actor Edgar Ott .

Jackson was married to Scottish actress Rona Anderson , with whom he had two sons, Graham and Roderick. He died of bone cancer in January 1990 at the age of 66 .
