Exit Wounds - The Copjäger (Original title: Exit Wounds ) is an American action - thriller from the year 2001 by Andrzej Bartkowiak with Steven Seagal in the lead role. The plot is based on the novel Exit Wounds by John Westermann.

action

The Detroit cop Orin Boyd is because of its indiscipline and brutality to his superiors not very popular. Although he saves the life of the Vice President in an assassination attempt, Boyd receives a reprimand from his boss and friend Frank Daniels and is transferred to the infamous 15th precinct by Chief Hinges . The customs here are rough, the crime rate is high and the fellow patrolmen are not very strict about legality.

Already on the first day he clashes with his new superiors Mulcahy and the police officers Montini and Usledinger . He is also given anti-aggression therapy and the like . a. condemned with the choleric TV presenter Wayne . Only Lewis Strutt, who is considered the informal leader of the police station, and George Clark , his new patrol partner, are on his side. It turns out that most of the officials are corrupt and involved in the drug business. The seedy gangster and drug dealer Latrell Walker seems to play a central role in this.

When Boyd investigates with Clark on his own, he is targeted by the criminal cops. Mulcahy, who Boyd now believes and trusts, helps him with the investigation, but is killed in the process. At the same time, information emerges suspecting Boyd to be related to her death. In this situation, Boyd meets with Walker and learns that this is actually a millionaire and that his criminal image is just a cover-up. He has gathered a group of people around him and tried to use modern surveillance technology to convict the corrupt police officers who also brought his brother to prison. As the head of the gang, Walker reveals Strutt of all people.

He has developed a special method of smuggling drugs hidden in clothing. The (fake) handover negotiated with Latrell is supposed to take place in a large laundry, where Boyd and Clark lurk in the background. But the bluff is exposed, Boyd's ex-boss Daniels is in league with Strutt. It comes to a showdown in which Boyd, Walker and Clark blow the gang and the corrupt police officers come to an end.

Boyd's reputation is restored and all allegations are dropped. Chief Hinges offers to reverse the transfer, but Boyd refuses, as he is now close friends with George. Walker's brother is also released.

General

  • Exit Wounds is the second in a three-part series of action films with exaggerated choreographed martial arts sequences that director Andrzej Bartkowiak shot with DMX and Anthony Anderson. The predecessor was Romeo must die , the successor Born 2 Die . Isaiah Washington, Jet Li and Tom Arnold also belong to the "regular filming team", with Washington starring in the first two strips, Li in films one and three and Arnold in films two and three.
  • Although the location is Detroit in the United States, the film was largely made in Canada , Calgary and Toronto . The helicopter shootout from the beginning of the film took place on Calgary's Center Street Bridge . Since it had just been restored shortly before filming, the city raised concerns about the action scenes. Filming in Toronto was suspended for several days after Montini actor David Vadim was arrested on charges of sexual assault.
  • One stunt man was killed while filming a car chase and another got away with a concussion. Steven Seagal sustained a knee injury.
  • The manner in which Jill Hennessy died on film corresponds to that of her role in Law & Order .
  • Actor and rap star DMX also contributed the soundtrack to the film. The best -known release of the album was the rap cover version of the Bill Withers hit Ain't no sunshine .
  • In the English-language original version, Eva Mendes' contributions to the dialogue were replaced by another speaker in the post-production. Mendes was not informed of this and only found out about it after the film was released. The reason given was that she didn't sound intelligent enough for her role - Mendes found this assessment an insult.
  • In addition to the applicable than uncut FSK 18 version is in Germany also available a cut FSK 16-DVD with a barrel length of about 96 minutes.
  • Exit Wounds grossed approximately $ 51.8 million at the US box office on an estimated budget of $ 33 million . In Germany 573,696 spectators were counted.

Reviews

“Steven Seagal as you know and like (or not) him. The story jumps a lot from time to time, but Seagal shows his martial arts side again. Here is again beaten and fired at what it takes. The good thing about it: luckily, the strip doesn't take itself too seriously. So it offers nice, if superficial action-fun cinema with some hardships. "

"Violent action film, whose outrageous script doesn't give a damn about inner logic, but primarily offers its main actor a platform for non-stop fights in order to meet the expectations of a relevant audience."

“The positive first: the action scenes are sometimes excellently choreographed. It's usually that fast in 'Matrix' or in the films of John Woo. And: some camera settings are breathtaking. In his second directorial work after ' Romeo Must Die ', ex-cameraman Andrzej Bartkowiak defies the vulnerability of the human organism from various suction-like perspectives. The fact that the story of corruption in the Detroit police force is excruciatingly thin and that Steven Seagal did not win through years of practicing Asian meditation techniques was unimportant to the US audience: With the best US start result in March, 'Exit Wounds' was an unexpectedly successful one for Seagal Comeback."
