The Daily Show (officially The Daily Show with Trevor Noah , until August 2015 The Daily Show with Jon Stewart ) is an American news satire that has been broadcasted since 1996. By December 1998, it was hosted by Craig Kilborn, 1999-2015 was Jon Stewart of the host . Cabaret artist Trevor Noah took over the show in September 2015.
Broadcast dates
The Daily Show airs Monday through Thursday from 11:00 PM to 11:30 PM EST on Comedy Central cable network. Until January 2010, a compilation of the four editions under the title The Daily Show: Global Edition was also shown on CNN International at the weekend in Europe . The broadcast of the Global Edition on CNN International ceased in early 2010. In Germany, Comedy Central broadcast the “Global Edition” until the end of 2009 on Mondays at 12:40 am and Thursdays at 1:20 am with German subtitles. The original English-language episodes were also freely available outside the United States through April 2014 on the broadcaster's official website. There is also a video archive that includes all videos from years since 1999, but which can no longer be played directly outside the United States.
concept
According to its self-portrayal, The Daily Show is a “fake news program”: The program refers to current events and makes a satirical commentary . At the same time, a critical look is taken at the work of the news media , especially the conservative commentators and anchors.
The show always starts with a short monologue by the moderator, followed by the individual contributions. There are also correspondents who i. d. R. stay in the studio; by means of a green screen, however, one gives the impression that they are at the scene of world events. Often the second half of the news section is also dedicated to a short report, for which one of the correspondents is usually responsible. In these sections, the program approaches investigative journalism and presents its own research on a particular topic, without losing its satirical and humorous character.
After the news section, a prominent guest appears, with whom the moderator speaks, mostly well-known actors and book authors, but also leading politicians. Guests have already been u. a. Bill and Hillary Clinton , John McCain , Barack Obama , Jimmy Carter , James Baker , Madeleine Albright , Colin Powell , Donald Rumsfeld , Henry Kissinger , Michael Moore , as well as the Presidents of Bolivia and Pakistan , Evo Morales and Pervez Musharraf , and the King of Jordan , Abdullah II. Sometimes an unabridged version of the conversation can be found on the program's website.
Under John Stewart, the program always ended with the “Moment of Zen ”, a short video excerpt that usually shows funny, absurd or bizarre appearances and statements by news anchors, politicians or well-known people from US television in the past few days.
In February 2015, Stewart announced that he would be leaving the show later in the year. Trevor Noah was introduced as Stewart's successor in March 2015 and he has hosted the show since September 2015.
successes
The show has been nominated and awarded several prizes. Among other things, she received the Emmy ten times in a row in the category Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series (from 2003) and won eight times in Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program (2001, 2003-2006, 2009, 2011-2012) , and twice the Peabody Award . The Daily Show also received an Emmy in 2017 .
The program was able to win many new viewers through its anti-government stance on the Iraq war , which was regularly reported in the segment “Mess O 'Potamia” - a play on words from mess ( confusion ) and Mesopotamia ( Mesopotamia ).
In the 2004 US presidential elections ("Indecision 2004"), the Daily Show became known for criticism of the appearance of both candidates and the media coverage; The target of the attacks was in particular the broadcaster Fox News, which is considered conservative . Stewart did not hide his dislike of George W. Bush during the election campaign and was himself a guest on several political talk shows . During an appearance on Fox News he was accused by presenter Bill O'Reilly that only "stoned slackers" would watch his show; then Comedy Central submitted studies that a Daily Show viewer has on average a higher education than a Fox News viewer.
During the campaign, the Daily Show team also released the bestseller America (The Book) , the audio book version of which won a Grammy in 2005.
In the United States , the Daily Show has a reputation for serving as a news substitute for young people. Stewart defends himself against this opinion: His broadcast is for entertainment and not for information. A viewer who does not keep up to date with the day's events cannot understand most of the innuendos anyway.
reception
The Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on Comedy Central about the Daily Show at the start of Germany , the conclusion was as follows: “Anyone who has been put to sleep long enough by the German comedian troupe will hardly believe what they see: 'The Daily Show' comes completely without skits out. The show even manages to be great entertainment by simply depicting reality ”. Jon Stewart's provocative interview form was also praised, it was "tough, warm and a little disrespectful" and "compared to the unbearably sultry summer interviews of ARD and ZDF can only be described as great cinema".
The heute show is a German adaptation of the Daily Show. Analogous to the original, this program deals with current issues from the political landscape of Germany, but also takes up international news. Also Extra 3 uses sketch of the Daily Show.
