occupation

actor Role name consequences Description of the role / comments
Oliver Welke 1− News presenter
Martina Hill Tina Hausten 1− The figure is based on the ZDF journalist Bettina Schausten . As long as this moderated the Politbarometer , Hausten presented opinion polls on all possible topics in “Competent in Percent” . Since Schausten has been running the ZDF capital city studio, the figure Hausten has mainly appeared as an expert on various topics in the studio and " outside reporter " in front of the green screen . In its original role, however, the character only rarely appears, especially as Welkes co-presenter at the awarding of the Golden Post.
Mandy Hausten 161− Based on Martina Hill's older character Tina Hausten and the first name Mandy , popular in the GDR , this is the role of an impulsive, naive woman with a clear Saxon dialect, dressed in the style of the 80s , with often petty-bourgeois left-wing views.
Dörte Hausten 176− Based on Martina Hill's older character Tina Hausten , this is the role of a divorced mother with a Berlin dialect and alternative - green views.
Antonia von Hausten 224− Based on Martina Hill's older character Tina Hausten , this is the role of a well-off Bavarian woman who represents conservative values.

Christian Ehring 1− Expert for various topics in the studio and "external reporter" in front of the green screen as well as moderator of the category "Aktenzeichen XY ... dozed" (allusion to the broadcast Aktenzeichen XY ... unsolved )
Dietrich Hollinderbäumer Ulrich von Heesen 1− Sarcastic " correspondent " in front of the green screen and expert on various topics in the studio. Running gags include his old age (he studied during the Nazi era ) and his excessive lifestyle including drug use, as you can see occasionally. In addition, he typically shows no serious interest in the topics he reports and uses his reports as a vacation. Sometimes he and Gernot Hassknecht represent the generation of pensioners who don't care about the future of young people.
Michael Haubold Olaf Schubert 1− Expert for various topics in the studio (mainly affecting East Germany), adding incoherent word associations that make no sense in terms of content and usually lead to clichéd allusions to his home country Saxony or the inferiority of women.
Martin Sonneborn 1−153 Active external reporter with a professional satirical focus; had to resign from the occupation from 2014 due to his political activities in the European Parliament .
Hans-Joachim Heist Gernot Hassknecht 5− Speaker of the commentary based on the topics of the day as well as moderator of the sections “Gernot Hassknecht solves your problem”, “Caution trap! Nepper, Schlepper, Debt Maker "(alluding to the show Caution Trap! Nepper, Schlepper, Bauernfänger )," Uncle Gernot's fairy tale hour "and" Gernot Hassknecht explains ... ", who regularly speaks in a rage (based on the segment" Back in Black " with Lewis Black of The Daily Show ). Hassknecht's comment usually ends with an old “disruption” image from ZDF.
Lutz van der Horst 6− Active outside reporter
Carsten van Ryssen 7−
Alexander Schubert Albrecht Humboldt 10− “External reporter” in front of the green screen, expert and the only member of the “church editorial team”, represents conservative positions in a satirical and exaggerated manner; strong similarities with Stephen Colbert from The Daily Show or the Colbert Report

The warm-up is used before the recording to get the audience in the studio in the mood. a. A short “Best Of” of past programs is shown (formerly also “Breakdown Videos”). During the recording, the audience can react and applaud independently; the warmer stays in the background and only gives a few signals.

Studio guests

Today's show occasionally welcomes people from journalism (such as Steffen Seibert , Maybrit Illner , Hans-Ulrich Jörges ) and politics, such as Claudia Roth , Wolfgang Bosbach , Wolfgang Kubicki , Hannelore Kraft , Anton Hofreiter , Peter Tauber , Gregor Gysi as studio guests , Jens Spahn and Robert Habeck . On January 27, 2012, the FDP parliamentary group chairman Rainer Brüderle was a guest in the studio, whose indistinct pronunciation , characterized by the Palatinate and Rhine-Hessian dialect , had previously been a frequent topic of the program. According to Welke, Brüderle “ enriched the content of today's show like no other”. With Peter Altmaier , an acting federal minister could be welcomed for the first time in the broadcast on May 3, 2013. In the election campaign Bussi today-show also were Dirk Niebel (Federal Minister for Development) and Jürgen Trittin (Green Party leader) to see.

Comedians and cabaret artists are invited again and again, such as Florian Schroeder , Michael Mittermeier , Monika Gruber , Mike Krüger , Bastian Pastewka , Simon Gosejohann , Elton , Timo Wopp , Christoph Sieber , Torsten Sträter , Ingmar Stadelmann , Abdelkarim , Friedemann Weise , Oliver Polak and Till Reiners .

Cameos had Kai Pflaume on October 25, 2013 as an "East German youth", Hella von Sinnen on January 31, 2014 as the "lesbian rector", Karl Lauterbach as "ZDF controller" on March 28, 2014, Oliver Kahn as himself in his role as a ZDF expert reporting on the international soccer match Germany - Argentina on September 5, 2014 and as an ex- Bayern player in the form of a video call in the broadcast on November 20, 2015, Reiner Calmund on February 6, 2015, Hugo Egon Balder on November 6th, 2015 as "substitute moderator", Stefan Raab shortly before the end of his career on December 11th, 2015, Axel Schulz on September 16th, 2016, October 6th, 2017 and September 7th, 2018, Christoph Maria Herbst on September 23rd , 2015 November 2018 and May 24, 2019, Florian Silbereisen on February 1, 2019 and Luke Mockridge on October 25, 2019.

Mishaps

The issue of October 22, 2010 could not be broadcast as planned at 10:30 p.m. due to a glitch when it was transferred to the broadcasting center in Mainz . The cause was a technical error in the broadcast center. The ZDF finally broadcast the literary program Die Vorleser and then made up for the heute show . The delay in broadcasting had a negative impact on the audience's audience rating .

The edition of March 18, 2011, in which Michael Mittermeier appeared as a guest , ended abruptly 41 seconds before the actual end of the program. Since the word “wank” and other sexual innuendos were used several times in connection with the term “atomic fetishism” on the show today, there was speculation about censorship on the part of the ZDF. In the press, a conscious reference to the censorship of the satirical program Windshield Wiper in May 1986 ( Chernobyl ) was suspected. In an interview on March 19, 2011, the show's producer, Georg Hirschberg, confirmed that the broadcast had been canceled due to a planning error that cut off the feed line from Cologne too early.

Bridging the summer breaks

In 2009, during the summer break, heute-show spezial was broadcast on the internet and hosted by Christian Ehring . This program was published weekly, but it was not televised.

There was something similar again in 2011, under the name of heute-show XXS weekly short editions filled the summer break from June 18 to September 15, 2011. Christian Ehring presented the first half of the XXS programs, the second half Lutz van der Horst . Today show XXS was available on the Internet. In contrast to heute-show special , heute-show XXS was also broadcast on television, on Fridays at 11:30 p.m. on the digital channel ZDFinfo . During the summer break of 2011, a book about the heute-show was published , which the presenter of the program Oliver Welke and head author of the heute-show Morten Kühne wrote together.

During the summer break of 2013, from June 14, 2013 to August 30, 2013, ZDF put a new edition of Wischmeyer's log of the crazy and stupid - The 12 Lost on its website every Friday . In every episode there was a satirical contribution by Dietmar Wischmeyer about a politician .

During the summer break of 2018, there was an overlap with Oliver Welke's work as a sports presenter for the first time. For example, during the World Cup programs hosted by Oliver Welke on ZDF, contributions by Fabian Köster in his Today Show role were regularly broadcast.

The summer break 2019 is characterized, among other things, by the regular publication of memes on the Instagram page and the YouTube channel of the heute show. Several small series were published on YouTube in parallel, including

Incidents

Information sheet from the Berlin police with a request for assistance, which was posted in the vicinity of the attack site.

On May 1, 2020, a camera team from the heute show , including the cabaret artist Abdelkarim , was attacked with cutting weapons by more than a dozen people, including masked people, on the sidelines of a demonstration against the measures against the corona virus. Six people - including the three security guards accompanying them - were injured so badly that they were taken to hospital, and one person was admitted to the hospital. Abdelkarim was unharmed. On the same day, the police arrested six suspects, who were released the following day. The State Police Department of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office took over the investigation.

reception

criticism

The jury for the Adolf Grimme Prize called the 2010 show today “a resolute system” that dares rather than just weighs up. You accelerate “far into the red area without making yourself comfortable in the cozy satire armchair. This is precisely why the personal derailment - as in the commentator caricature Gernot Hassknecht or the outside reporter cliché Ulrich von Heesen - is a thoroughly staged leitmotif. But today's show picks up the real madness in unstaged everyday life. It is bold art when ex- Titanic boss Martin Sonneborn penetrates people deeply with minimal gestures and maximum presence of mind. […] ”In Sonneborn's serious heute microphone,“ a Germany without a filter ”speaks. Welke is “more of an announcer than Anchorman , which is not a problem, on the contrary, it is the system of today's show . Because even if Jon Stewart's Daily Show , this daily US American news satire, was not entirely uninvolved (just like Rudi 's daily show , by the way ), the show of today is by no means simply a public service satirical commission into the corset of an American model of success. “In particular, she praised“ the programmatic decision to now broadcast the show on a weekly basis ”.

In 2012, the jury of the Hanns-Joachim-Friedrichs-Preis praised the news comedy, which combines the classic political satire with the graphic distortions of the caricature . In this way, it gives criticism of politics and society in the medium of television its own place. The vicious satirical analyzes would expose the rituals of politics and especially of the television news. In particular, she praised Welke's style of language and moderation: "Enlightenment with pleasure in times of disgust with politics and mistrust of conventional reporting."

In 2012, the magazine Cicero judged the show today: “But the basic tenor of the show is questionable: Welke and his colleagues - unlike most cabaret artists - have no concern. They don't ridicule what they want to change. They do not fight with the weapons of wit and irony for what they consider to be a better, fairer or more social world. No: Welke and his family are all about portraying the political caste as a whole as a collection of morons. (...) The 'heute-show' brings a quota of what is the most important for the ZDF giants. And by the way, it encourages disgust with politics and contempt for politicians. "

On the occasion of the anniversary show for the 50th birthday of the ZDF, the most popular program in the history of the station was searched for via internet voting, with today's show taking first place ahead of 1, 2 or 3 and Wetten, dass ..?

In 2014, Harald Schmidt criticized the professional ethos of the television production of the heute-show , as allegedly the reaction of the audience to clips from other TV formats was cut into punchlines in the heute-show .

Wolf Reiser found in 2019 that Welke stood for a “slapstick” that was similar to “boyish humor in the playground of a Waldorf school ”.

Controversy

2010

The program received negative criticism after an interview between Martin Sonneborn and the pharmaceutical lobbyist Peter Schmidt was broadcast on May 14, 2010. Sonneborn mainly used Schmidt's statements, which were not intended for the public and were made during the breaks between the interviews were. Schmidt was annoyed about the broadcast and described it as a “real mess”, because Sonneborn had lured him with the request for a ZDF interview, which is “if possible in one of the 'heute' programs, preferably in ' heute-journal ', place “wool. Sonneborn himself spoke of a misunderstanding. After Peter Schmidt became managing director of Pro Generika e. V. had been dismissed, reprimanded Thomas Bellut , then program director of the ZDF, this procedure and forbade the editorial staff of the heute-show to work with the brands heute und heute-journal .

2013

Carolin Kebekus's contribution on the role of women in the Catholic Church, which was broadcast on February 22, 2013 , met with criticism from the Church. According to media reports, a spokesman for the German Bishops' Conference is said to have tried to prevent the broadcast of the conversation between Kebekus and Cardinal Joachim Meisner .

2014

The broadcast got into the press again when the German Bundestag did not issue a filming permit that had been applied for in October 2014 because it was not a matter of “political-parliamentary reporting”. However, on November 5, 2014, the heute-show received a day accreditation and was allowed to shoot again in the Bundestag.

2015

In February 2015, the heute-show received a lot of media attention, because in its edition of February 6, 2015 a statement by the left-wing politician Marlena Schiewer was taken out of context and she was portrayed as a supposed former NPD and current AfD voter . In an MDR report, Schiewer expressed her concern about the increasing popularity of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in her village: “Here in the village there are quite a few people who are right-wing and who simply say: 'I don't want them anymore Vote for the NPD because it is too far-right for me, so I am now voting for the AfD. ' I always say: That's the NPD in a friendly way. ”Since the show today hadn't shown the first part of the statement, the wrong impression was created. In response to Schiever's criticism, the heute-show editors apologized via Facebook ; the section has been removed from the ZDF media library. On February 8, 2015, Schiewer said that Oliver Welke had asked her to apologize by phone. In the heute show on February 13, 2015, Welke apologized again and this time showed Schiewer's statement in context.

Something similar happened in 2014, when a quote from Federal President Joachim Gauck about the responsibility of banks was taken out of context and turned into the opposite. This was complained about, among other things, in the show Walulis sucht Fern .

2016

Shortly after the first round of the presidential election in Austria in 2016 , the heute-show published a picture of a schnitzel in the form of a swastika with the words "Austrians vote as they do it" in response to the election victory of Norbert Hofer ( FPÖ ) know from Schnitzel: Avoid flat and beautiful brown ", then the shipment by an Austrian was jus -Students and a German for libel, sedition and defamation of organs and representatives of foreign countries displayed. The FPÖ is also said to have considered a lawsuit itself. The Mainz public prosecutor's office did not initiate any investigation against the “heute-show”.

2018

The now-show from February 2, 2018 showed a speech-section of the AFD -Politikers Dieter Amann as an expert in the main committee of the German Bundestag on language skills and integration of refugees into the labor market, in which Amann stuttered . Without comment, this initially led to amusement in the audience, then moderator Welke briefly imitated the stutter. This was interpreted by the AfD as a joke of Amann's speech disorder. However, Amann had pointed out his speech disorder at the beginning of the speech, which was not shown . The editors of the show today stated that they did not know the beginning and asked Amann to apologize. This accepted it on the condition that it would take place in the broadcast itself. An apology was then pronounced at the end of the February 16, 2018 issue.

In the edition of April 6, 2018, a discussion about chocolate Easter bunnies from Lindt , which took place mainly in social networks, was taken up. The product was named on receipts as a "traditional rabbit", which was viewed as an attack on German traditions and submission to Islam . Alluding to this fact, moderator Welke explained that the Easter bunny is a "central figure in Christian mythology". After this statement, a parody of the painting The Last Supper was shown, on which Jesus was replaced by the Easter bunny, as well as a crucified plush bunny. The Mainz public prosecutor's office, which had received numerous criminal charges against Welke, announced on April 24th that no investigation would be initiated because there was no criminal abuse of denominations, religious societies and ideological associations .
