Scientific career

One year after graduating from high school in 1990 at the Asam Gymnasium in Munich , Hofreiter began studying chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU). After two semesters, he began studying biology there in 1991 , which he completed in 1997 as a biologist. In September 2003, he was at the Institute of Systematic Botany at LMU with a thesis on the South American plant genus Bomarea to Dr. rer. nat. PhD. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at this institute until 2006 . His botanical author's abbreviation is " Hofreiter ".

Hofreiter became a member of the Greens as a pupil in 1986. From 1988 to 1995 he was the spokesman for the Sauerlach local association and from 1996 to 2006 he was the spokesman for the Green District Association in Munich-Land . Between 2001 and 2006 he was also the spokesman for the State Ecology Working Group. In addition to his work at the LMU, he worked from 1998 to 2003 for the Bavarian member of the state parliament of the Greens Susanna Tausendfreund and from 2003 to 2005 for the member of parliament Christian Magerl .

He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2005 , to which he was always elected - most recently in 2017 - via the Bavarian state list . His constituency is Munich-Land . In the 16th Bundestag from 2005 to 2009 he was chairman of his parliamentary group in the committee for transport, building and urban development. He is a founding member of the parliamentary group Free Flowing Rivers .

On June 8, 2011, he was unanimously elected to succeed Winfried Hermann as Chairman of the Committee on Transport, Building and Urban Development in the German Bundestag. Until he was elected committee chairman, he was the transport policy spokesman for the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group.

After the federal election in 2013, he applied to chair his party's parliamentary group. On October 8, 2013, he was elected to this office by 49 of the 61 members of the Green Party in the Bundestag, which he shares with co-chair Katrin Göring-Eckardt .

In May 2014, a report in the Bild newspaper announced that Hofreiter had not registered his second home in Berlin between 2005 and 2014 and had not paid any second home tax for it. Hofreiter stated that he had lost sight of the registration and paid taxes in the amount of 2475 euros.

In the new election to the parliamentary group executive committee in autumn 2019, Hofreiter and his co-parliamentary group leader Göring-Eckardt prevailed again as group chairman in a vote against the two challengers Cem Özdemir and Kirsten Kappert-Gonther . He received 58.21 percent of the vote in the internal parliamentary election.

Political positions

Within the party, as well as by the media and the public, Hofreiter is assigned to the left wing of the Greens.

Environment, climate and agricultural policy

Hofreiter advocates a ban on the cultivation of genetically modified plants . He also calls for antibiotics to be restricted in animal fattening and a reduction in the use of pesticides in agriculture. He rejected the Veggie Day called for in the federal election campaign ; rather, the structures of the agricultural industry would have to be changed.

Hofreiter is strongly committed to an agricultural turnaround. Since not enough feed is grown in Germany for meat production, the feed in the form of GM soy has to be imported. These soybeans mostly come from South America. Hofreiter sharply criticizes the fact that the peasant structures that dominate there are being destroyed by European agricultural and trade policy, as they can no longer keep up with large foreign companies. Hofreiter said in an interview about "The blood trail of soy": "We need an agricultural turnaround away from quantity and more towards quality."

His most important political goal is to protect our environment from destruction under the motto "Let's do it!". For Anton Hofreiter, environmental protection is a policy of justice to protect people with low incomes.

In June 2016, Anton Hofreiter published his book "Meat Factory Germany: How Factory Farming Destroys Our Livelihood and What We Can Do About It". He calls for a reduction in plastic waste, is in favor of binding regulations for the industry and proposes a compulsory levy of 20 cents for plastic bags . He also warns of the consequences of climate change and calls for far-reaching national and international measures to achieve the climate goals.

Transport policy

Hofreiter rejects the car toll proposed by the then Federal Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt for foreigners. He considers the planned toll to be inconsistent with EU law, unjust and unecological. He advocates strengthening rail traffic and against a complete privatization of the rail network. He calls for a general speed limit for federal motorways .

Economic policy

He rejects the transatlantic trade agreements TTIP and CETA in their current form. He fears a lowering of consumer standards and the undermining of the rule of law by international arbitration courts . He is an opponent of Public Private Partnerships (PPP) and criticizes them as opaque and too expensive.

Tax policy

Hofreiter advocates a wealth tax. He sees this as the right instrument to strengthen the cohesion of society. According to Hofreiter, a fair tax system is a small building block in order to also take responsibility for “the richest one percent of society”, since they too have to contribute something to the financing of this society.

Domestic politics

In the discussion about the relationship between security and freedom, he rejects unreasonable data retention . This restricts fundamental freedoms. He advocates the liberalization of cannabis a -Konsums.

Foreign, European and Security Policy

In order to resolve international conflicts, he advocates a stronger focus on crisis prevention , diplomacy and development cooperation. He refuses to deliver weapons to the Ukrainian army. With regard to the ongoing crisis in Greece, he calls for socially just changes to the rescue program, taxation of the wealthy and the containment of corruption. Zeit.de published a plea by the Hofreiter for more Europe on July 26, 2015.
