Christian Magerl (born September 23, 1955 in Freising ) is a biologist and politician in Bavaria ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). From 1986 to 1998 and from 2003 to 2018 he was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament .

Life and work

After graduating from the Josef Hofmiller High School in Freising in 1975, Magerl studied chemistry and biology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1981 he passed the state examination and received a doctorate in zoology ; his dissertation, published in 1984, is entitled Habitat Structure Analysis in Songbirds During the Breeding Season in the northeastern Erdinger Moos . From 1980 to 1984 he taught at a private school, then he worked as a biologist for the Bund Naturschutz. Magerl has a voluntary teaching position at the Faculty of Horticulture and Food Technology at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences . In recognition of his longstanding teaching commitment, Magerl was appointed honorary professor at the university on October 16, 2019.

MP

Magerl belonged to the first GREEN parliamentary group from 1986 to 1998 (three electoral terms). On September 21, 2003 he was re- elected to the Bavarian state parliament via the Upper Bavarian district list. Until 2008 he was a member of the parliament's committee for economy, infrastructure, transport and technology. Since 2008 he has been chairman of the Environment and Health Committee.

Since 2013 he has also been a member of the Petitions Committee.

The parliamentary group elected him its environmental and forest policy spokesman.

In the state elections in Bavaria in 2008 and 2013, he was defeated in the Freising constituency of the CSU direct candidate Florian Herrmann . After the state elections in 2018 , he left the state parliament.

Local politics

In the local election for the district administrator of the Freising district on March 2, 2008, he received 26.68 percent of the vote; in the runoff election on March 16, 2008, he was defeated by Michael Schwaiger ( Free Voters ) with 41.5 percent.

Volunteering

From 1985 to 1986 and from 1998 to 2003 he was the species protection officer at the Bund Naturschutz . Christian Magerl is also the district chairman of the Bund Naturschutz in Freising and regularly offers birding tours.

Fighters against the airport in Erdinger Moos

As an opponent of Munich Airport's expansion, he regularly draws attention to himself, especially with numerous actions aimed at preventing the construction of a controversial third runway. He had already unsuccessfully fought the initial plans for today's Munich Airport.

Honors

In 2009 Magerl was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit and in 2013 the Bavarian State Medal for special services to the environment .
