The state-run Josef-Hofmiller-Gymnasium Freising (short: JoHo) is a science, technology and modern language high school in the Bavarian city of Freising . With almost 800 students, it is the second largest of the three Freising high schools. The new school building was moved into its current location in Vimystraße in 1960.

Namesake

The namesake is the essayist and critic Josef Hofmiller (1872–1933), who was a grammar school teacher until his death and is still recognized today in the world of literature as a writer, critic and editor. He was also a champion for the equality of the former high schools with the humanistic high schools. These achievements and his many years of teaching activity in Freising as a teacher of French and English were the reasons why the school was named after him from the beginning.

Location of the school

The school is located north of the Freising city center in the immediate vicinity of the Freising Clinic , the Pallottine Church and the largest Freising Hotel. The Vimystraße on which it is located is named after the former Vimy barracks in the neighborhood. The way to downtown Freising is about ten minutes; it is about 15 minutes to the Freising train station.

History and expansion of the grammar school

The history of this grammar school begins with the "realistic classes" attached to the cathedral grammar school , for which the upgrading to the upper secondary school took place in 1952 , which necessitated a new building and the separation from the cathedral grammar school for its nine grades. Planning and construction then dragged on until autumn 1960; on December 10, 1960, the first construction phase of the educational facility now known as the “Josef-Hofmiller-Oberrealschule” in Vimystraße could finally be inaugurated and occupied. As early as December 8, 1964, the second construction phase was handed over to its destination. This was urgently needed, because the city's upper secondary school for girls was incorporated at the beginning of the school year 1964/65 and therefore a “secondary school branch” was introduced, which made French possible as a third foreign language. From August 1, 1965, the school was named "Josef-Hofmiller-Gymnasium". The increase in the number of students made an extension with a double gym and indoor swimming pool necessary, which was moved into in 1970. Smaller conversions and new constructions took place in the following decades. Since 2008, the JoHo has also had an auditorium to which a kitchen is attached, which ensures that the students are supplied with lunch. The cafeteria is maintained by the "Viva Vita" team, which is part of Lebenshilfe Freising.

education

The Hofmiller-Gymnasium is the only Gymnasium in Freising with English as the first foreign language. In the sixth grade, students can choose between Latin and French as a second foreign language. Those who choose the linguistic branch choose Latin in the sixth grade and learn French as a third foreign language from the eighth grade. In the 6th grade, students choose French as their second foreign language to take the science and technology branch. The JoHo is characterized by a scientific and technical orientation, which is why it was accepted as a MINTec school in the 2013/14 school year for its outstanding performance in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology . Furthermore, the grammar school is a junior premium school for the merits in the junior economy project and a school without racism - school with courage .
