Gerhard Abstreiter

Gerhard Abstreiter (born November 27, 1946 in Allershausen ) is a German semiconductor physicist and university lecturer .

biography

Gerhard Abstreiter attended the Josef-Hofmiller-Gymnasium in Freising . After passing the higher education entrance exam in 1968, he studied physics at the Technical University of Munich (TU Munich) ; In 1973 he completed his physics studies with the diploma exam. In the following two years he prepared his dissertation at the Technical University of Munich . In 1975 he did his doctorate there with the topic Far-infrared cyclotron resonance in silicon inversion layers .

From 1975 to 1979 Abstreiter worked at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart . 1979–1986 he worked as a group leader at the physical institute of the Technical University of Munich. During this work, he was in 1984 with a thesis on experimental physics habilitation . In the period 1986/1987 he stayed for four months as a visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck . Since 1987 he has been a full professor at the Physics Institute and at the Walter Schottky Institute of the Technical University of Munich. In 1995 a four-month visiting professorship followed at the University of California, Santa Barbara , USA , and in 2000 two-month visiting professorships at Columbia University , New York , USA, and at the University of Tokyo , Japan.

Gerhard Abstreiter has been a member of the Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) since 2006 . Since April 2013 he has been director of the TUM Institute for Advanced Study .

Abstreiter is married and has two children.

Research areas

Abstreiter primarily researches the physics and technology of low-dimensional semiconductor systems based on silicon and gallium arsenide . He develops novel components based on quantum effects, for which he carries out basic research on the electronic and optical properties of quantum dots and wires.

In 2002, his group, together with research colleagues from the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, took an important step towards future spin electronics - they succeeded for the first time in determining the spin interaction between electrons and atomic nuclei in a semiconductor solely through electrical measurements .
