Vegetative characteristics

Bomarea species are perennial herbaceous plants that usually grow as climbing climbing plants. There are rhizomes formed. The leaves, distributed along the entire stem axis , are turned 180˚, have short stems, are simple and have many nerves.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are in terminal, simple to compound dold-like inflorescences . The hermaphroditic flowers are radially symmetrical , threefold and tubular to bell-shaped. The bloom cladding sheets are free and bright red, orange or yellow colored, more rarely also greenish. There are two circles with three stamens each. The anthers are yellow or gray-blue. The three carpels are fused into a sub or middle ovary.

The flower formula is:

Capsules or berries are formed as fruits.

Distribution and location requirements

The distribution center of the genus Bomarea are areas in the Andes between Colombia and Bolivia. Most species grow in forests and bushes in a more or less humid environment. Only some species of the subgenus Wichuraea and Bomarea s. st. can be found in the drier valleys of the Andes. None of the species grows in marshland and swamp areas.

Systematics

The genus Bomarea was established in 1804 by Charles François Brisseau de Mirbel . The generic name Bomarea honors the French naturalist Jacques-Christophe Valmont de Bomare (1731–1807), author of the Dictionnaire universel d'histoire naturelle . As lectotype in 1995 Bomarea ovata (Cav.) Mirb. set. The two genera Bomarea and Alstroemeria belong to the tribe Alstroemerieae within the family of Alstroemeriaceae . The genera Bomarea and Alstroemeria differ among other things in their basic chromosome numbers ; for Bomarea it is x = 9, for Alstroemeria x = 8.

The genus Bomarea comprises about 150 species in four subgenera:

  • Subgenus Baccata Hofreiter : with 5 species.
  • Subgenus Bomarea : with 79 species.
  • Subgenus Sphaerine : with 12 species.
  • Subgenus Wichuraea : with 18 species.
