occupation

Walulis sucht Fern is a satire show that was broadcast on the German channels Tele 5 and EinsPlus . The program parodically presents the background and functionality of television programs. The program was conceived and moderated by the show's eponym, Philipp Walulis . The motto of the show is "TV is stupid, but also a lot of fun!". The broadcast of the program on television was ended on October 1, 2016 due to the discontinuation of EinsPlus; On YouTube, however , the program with the title WALULIS continues in a modified form.

concept

The concept of the show is the BBC Four telecast Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe ajar. Similar to Switch Reloaded and Kalkofe's television screen , TV programs and shows are parodied at Walulis Watching TV.

The performers often break through the fourth wall to give the viewer a look behind the scenes of television. The focus is often on background information such as production and scripting modalities, which is usually not the case with other parody formats: For example (as a typical example) a television chef is filmed in an episode in such a way that he could hardly move in his narrow kitchen, because the sound team , which was also filmed against the convention, constantly stands in his way, which he complains about to the audience.

Walulis sucht Fern targets the common patterns of German information and entertainment programs. The parodic interpretations are dedicated to scripted reality in the style of Bauer sucht Frau as well as classic news programs or the ARD crime scene .

Transmission data

The first season of Walulis sucht Fern was broadcast in December 2011 on the private broadcaster TELE 5 .

The digital broadcaster EinsPlus broadcast the program from May 9, 2012 to September 12, 2012 in an extended version. The second season with 6 episodes was broadcast from September 26, 2012 to December 5, 2012 every second Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. on EinsPlus. In addition, the program has been shown since March 2013 with individual clips in the satirical program Extra 3 . The third season was from September 17, 2013 to November 26, 2013 on EinsPlus. All episodes were repeated by EinsPlus at different times in 2014. The fourth season was broadcast weekly on Tuesdays at 8:15 p.m. on EinsPlus from September 16, 2014.

When EinsPlus ceased broadcasting on October 1, 2016, Philipp Walulis also announced the end of the broadcast in its conventional form in a YouTube clip.

New concept

Between December 2016 and January 2017, the program was prepared as a YouTube broadcast with the help of the viewers. Under the motto Make the Internet Great again , he worked with his subscribers and their tips to develop a new concept, which has been published weekly since 2017 under the title WALULIS and which deals critically with the media.

Publications

As part of the episode "Your television lies - about astro shows, folk music and other embarrassments", which describes "how to make your own folk music group", the song Mein Grauer Star was produced by the fictional band "Die Zillertaler Zitzenzuzler". Like all of the show's highlight clips, the song was published on YouTube , was shown on the show and is also available for download from popular download portals .

In addition, the single "Wir sind scheiße" was produced for the jungle camp . However, this is only about two minutes long and is offered as a free download. The single “Testicular Cancer”, sung by the fictional boy band “New Kids in the Backstreet”, was not released “because of protests”.

Pear Tree Institute

The “renowned pear tree institute” was mentioned in all programs. This is a fictional institute. Since the second season, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Birnbaum, the founder of this institute, results from various (also fictitious) studies. The “study results” then formed the starting point for the next contribution.

Criticism and Awards

The jury of the Grimme Prize awarded in March 2012 in the entertainment department justified the award of Walulis Watch TV, among other things, with the fact that the program "observes so precisely that its form of satire can pass through as a valuable contribution to media criticism and media education" . The jury also attested that the format was “more refreshing in look and more productive in terms of point security” than “many great prime-time comedies”. Walulis watches television is "one of the most enjoyable discoveries of the TV year [2011]".

“He doesn’t like Oliver Kalkofe, he doesn’t school like some older cabaret artists, he doesn’t dumbfound like Stefan Raab: Munich’s Philipp Walulis has been recognized for his intelligent, wonderfully evil and media-critical television satire - although there are only four episodes of it . "( Judith Liere : Süddeutsche Zeitung )
