Planet Wissen is a documentation and science magazine broadcast that is produced by WDR and SWR in cooperation with ARD-alpha on a weekly basis. The first program aired on September 30, 2002. Bayerischer Rundfunk has been involved in the production since May 2, 2016.

Concept of broadcast

The one-hour television show, which is broadcast on working days in the afternoons in several third programs and in the evenings on ARD-alpha and repeated on the following days in various third programs, deals with a specific topic. Two moderators lead through the program, to which expert guests have been invited to the studio. Planet Wissen sees itself as an exciting combination of television and the Internet and is therefore complemented by documentary contributions as well as literature recommendations and web tips. In addition, the program maintains an extensive website on which further information on the topics of the program is offered. In 2004 , Planet Wissen received the Grimme Online Award in the TV category for this Internet portal . Influenced by the increasing importance of the Internet, the show had a moderator and a web reporter in the early years, who presented web links and contributions from the Internet on the topic. In the meantime, the integration of the Internet has moved far into the background and we switched to normal double moderation. Further links and books are briefly presented. A revised design has been broadcast since summer 2008.

The broadcast concept was originally to be modified from 2012. In the meantime, the program was only broadcast for the first time on WDR and SWR, and ARD-Alpha is also back there. Increasingly, references to and overlaying of Internet pages with interactive topics were observed. In 2013 a new design and logo as well as a new website were introduced and the studio setting was renewed. While the programs produced by the WDR and SWR had the same structure over the years, the WDR programs today mostly deviate from the previous scheme. Jo Hiller presents external reports under the title “Planet Wissen Extra”, while Andrea Grießmann moderates alone from the studio.

Moderation

The show is moderated by Birgit Klaus (since 2002) and Dennis Wilms (since 2003) for SWR and by Andrea Grießmann (since 2011) and Jo Hiller (since 2010) for WDR. Caro Matzko and Rainer Maria Jilg lead through the BR programs .

Initially, Planet Wissen had a moderator and a network reporter in every program, who in between presented network content on the topic and referred to further websites. In the course of time, the network issues became less and less. Finally, a double moderation was introduced instead. Between 2002 and 2016, the moderators from WDR and SWR alternated weekly, and since 2016 there has also been a moderator duo from BR.
