Walulis ( spelling WALULIS ) is a German satirical show that questions current media trends. The motto of the program is "WALULIS - the drug distribution in the madhouse Internet". It is produced for funk , the online service of ARD and ZDF , and is the further development of Walulis Watch TV , which ran on EinsPlus .

Emergence

The aim was to redesign the TV format Walulis sucht fern for the YouTube format . For this purpose, moderator Philipp Walulis and his team analyzed the functionality of successful YouTube formats in a three-month development phase entitled “Make The Internet Great Again”. They considered how to successfully translate the findings to their own format and how to make the most of their television experience and YouTube video requirements. This development phase was public and users were asked to make suggestions and criticize themselves.

An additional YouTube channel called Walulis Daily has existed since September 2019, which is basically based on the form of the regular Walulis channel , but from Monday to Thursday a video on current political issues (often apart from the media-heavy focus of Walulis , see the following section) published in the early evening. Since October 2019, the channel has also been publishing a longer video with a studio audience on Fridays, which acts as a weekly review under the name Walulis Daily Turbo and, in addition to a main topic, picks up on various other - mostly bizarre - messages ("hot news") and presents contributions from the community (the " Retro show ”).

content

In two videos per week (from December 2018 three videos per week were produced for a while), which are published in the funk mediathek and on YouTube, Walulis mostly deals with a single topic and shows the background. The spectrum of topics ranges from current TV events to critical viewing of YouTubers to a differentiated view of current Internet hypes.

shape

The videos are always based on an elaborately researched journalistic core, which is however humorously packaged. The episodes are recorded in a late-night studio with Philipp Walulis at his desk. The usual coffee cup at Walulis has the shape of the poop emojis . The videos are interrupted by excerpts from the original broadcasts and small game sequences. Other members of the team can be seen in the game sequences, for example "the Assi". Each episode also includes some of the following fixed elements:

Recurring elements at WALULIS
shape meaning
Subscription call Instead of clumsily calling for " likes ", subscribing and commenting at the end of the video, as usual , small, independent videos are always shot in which the call for subscription is humorously packaged. At the beginning of the series, this was a selection of pre-produced videos that were often used several times regardless of their content. A topic-related ending is now being produced for each video.
The renowned Birnbaum Institute A parody of polling institutes . The survey results are presented as prestigious research, but are utter nonsense. This category was taken over from the previous broadcast.
The Assi As a little man from the street, the “beer lover” throws in his populist opinion, which is often the opposite of Philip's differentiated opinion. He speaks in a Rhineland dialect.
The safari cat This cat always appears in new forms in the joke overlays. Alluding to the success of cat videos on the internet. She has her own band.
The unexpected comparison with Hitler Element announced by an elaborate graphic that announces the drifting of the argument towards an unsuitable Hitler comparison. Prototype Godwin's law . Sometimes this is left out and the audience should write a joke in the comments.
The homeless An educated, but homeless person who is visited by the moderator on a regular basis in order to explain difficult issues as an expert on mostly economic issues.
Forrest Drunk (Walulis Daily) Editorial member Leo recites Franz Josef Wagner's daily column from the BILD newspaper in an extremely intrusive and hopelessly drunk manner to another member of the editorial team. The title and setting - a park bench - are allusions to the film Forrest Gump .
Law Facts with Poddy Editorial member Poddy explains to some other employees the legal basis of the respective video topic. The humor results from the overly enthusiastic reactions to rather lengthy facts. The segment always ends with a running gag, which stages various bizarre headgear.
The Sack of Truth (Walulis Daily) In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , two or three changing editorial members per video usually gave humorous exaggerated impressions of their everyday work in the home office.

However, there are also videos that deviate from this format. The series Why actually? dispenses with the elements mentioned above. Instead, they are shorter, animated videos, synchronized by Walulis, which always get to the bottom of a specific question on the subject of media (e.g. "Why is there still Teletext ?"). On the other hand, there is the once a month “Community Service”, which extends the standard format of the channel. Walulis is supported by a member of the team as co-moderator. Community contributions are also woven into the actual topic of the episode: User comments from the previous month are always chosen according to often arbitrary categories, viewer questions are answered and a viewer's YouTube channel is “honored” with a subscription through the Walulis channel.

Since the start of the sister channel Walulis Daily , some of the above-mentioned characters and elements - such as the Assi, the homeless and the Birnbaum Institute - have disappeared and the various authors and editors of the show mainly appear as themselves in clips.

success

The channel now has over 3.5 million views a month. The videos often end up in the YouTube trends. In 2018, the channel was awarded the television prize in the “Best Web Channel” category by the specialist magazinequotemeter.
