Media library (television)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TV stations , for example in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, refer to a media library as an Internet service that primarily offers videos and live streams . Most of the time the contributions are also broadcast on television around the time of publication . In the media library, however, they can also be viewed as video-on-demand at a different time. The more general term “ media library ” also refers to other providers such as libraries and training centers.

Offer and availability

In many of the television stations' media libraries, not all programs on the respective broadcast day can be found. Rather - especially with the smaller public broadcasters - only a selection of certain programs is offered. For legal reasons, the availability of media content is often limited to a certain period of time or to a certain geographical area, which is particularly common with television films or sports broadcasts. For example, some of the articles in the ARD media library are depublished after seven days .

technology

Streaming media technology is used to distribute media content over the Internet . Here, the provider stores a video file on a server and then makes it available for users to view at any time via the broadcaster's website .

criticism

Consumer advocates criticize the fact that when using media libraries, data is transferred to the Internet , some of which are not even required for using streaming services or which are even personal. This data is not only sent to the providers of the streaming services, but in numerous cases also to several other servers. They are usually used to measure media reach , but usage statistics, the names of the mobile phone providers and identifiers are also sent to data collectors such as Google , Facebook or Microsoft , particularly in connection with use with mobile apps .
