Use in campaigns

The three-dimensional representation of a data octopus is a means of visualizing the subject on data protection demonstrations and protests against surveillance . like the freedom instead of fear actions.

The negative prize of the Big Brother Awards honors data octopuses every year. It is awarded in Germany by digitalcourage (formerly the Association for the Promotion of Public Moved and Still Data Traffic, FoeBuD), outside Germany by international civil rights organizations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the operator organization of the data protection portal Privacy.org. The term data octopus was documented for the first time as part of the application for the Big Brother Awards 2001.

criticism

Occasionally the octopus metaphor is criticized as an anti-Semitic cliché. In 2015 , the anti-Semitism researcher Götz Aly accused the Süddeutsche Zeitung of having set the trend for anti-Semitic malice against Mark Zuckerberg with an octopus cartoon .
