Big Brother Awards
The BigBrotherAwards ( BBA ) are negative prizes that are given annually in several countries to authorities, companies, organizations and people. According to the founders, the prizes are awarded to those who impair the privacy of people in a special and lasting manner or who have or are making personal data available to third parties . The prizes were received by Microsoft in 2002 , Blizzard Entertainment in 2005 , PTV Planning Transport Verkehr AG in 2007 , Deutsche Telekom in 2008 , and Gert G. Wagner , Chairman of the in 2011Federal Government Censorship Commission , as well as 2016 through Change.org . The organization also gives a positive award to honor people and organizations who have been committed to data protection. In Austria this is the Defensor Libertatis , first awarded in 2005, in Germany the Julia and Winston Award , first in 2014 and named after the main characters of the novel 1984 .
Goal setting
The prices are intended to draw attention to data protection issues and to highlight negative developments. The name of this award is an allusion to the figure of Big Brother (Big Brother) in George Orwell's novel 1984 . The BigBrotherAwards were launched in 1998 by Privacy International . They were awarded for the first time in 1998 in Great Britain , in 1999 for the first time in Austria and since 2000 also in Germany and Switzerland . In 2003 there were already BBA awards ceremonies in 14 different countries.
In Germany, the digitalcourage association (formerly FoeBuD, association for the promotion of public moving and immobile data traffic) is the founder and organizer of the negative price for data octopuses . In addition to digitalcourage, the jury includes six other independent organizations: Chaos Computer Club e. V. (CCC), German Association for Data Protection e. V. (DVD), Förderverein Informationstechnik und Gesellschaft e. V. (FITUG), Forum Computer Scientists for Peace and Social Responsibility e. V. (FIfF), Humanist Union e. V.
