history

CSS was founded in St. Gallen in 1899 as a self-help organization and in 1914 recognized by the federal government as a health insurance company with activities throughout Switzerland. In 1919, the Swiss Christian Social Health Insurance moved its headquarters to Lucerne. In 1987, CSS Versicherung , as the company has called itself since then, had over a million insured for the first time. As part of a structural reform, the company gave up its association structure in 2003/2004 and founded CSS Holding AG as a non-listed parent company and financial holding company for all operating companies of the CSS Group. The sole shareholder remained the CSS Verein, which controls under stock corporation law, but no longer performs any operational tasks.

On January 1, 2008, CSS Versicherung took over its competitor Intras . By merging with the eighth largest Swiss health insurer at the time, the company increased its market share from 13 percent to 18 percent. Today this is 15.8 percent.

Since September 1, 2016, Philomena Colatrella has been the head of one of the largest Swiss insurance companies for the first time as CEO.

In mid-2020, CSS parted with its corporate customer business and the division was sold to the Zurich Insurance Group .

With the establishment of CSS Versicherung AG in Vaduz in 2006, the CSS Group expanded its business activities to Germany as part of the free movement of services.
