The PTV AG is a 1979 founded software company based in the Baden Karlsruhe and belongs to Porsche Automobil Holding , based in Stuttgart . The company develops and sells transport , mobility and logistics .

history

In 1979, Hans Hubschneider and Michael Sahling founded the PTV Planungsbüro Transport und Verkehr GmbH in Karlsruhe. Between 1979 and 1982 they designed the first computer program for route planning. The first projects included location and distribution planning for Raiffeisen in Schleswig-Holstein, route network planning for bus and road traffic in Mannheim and route planning for Langnese-Iglo. These projects also formed the basis for further software products at the then still young company.

PTV AG was founded in 1999 and merged the five "PTV GmbHs" that had been created by then. From 2001 the company was active in the fields of traffic, mobility and logistics. On July 1, 2011, Hans Hubschneider handed over management to Vincent Kobesen. In 2014, new national subsidiaries were established in Great Britain, Mexico, Japan and Dubai. In September 2016, the PTV Group took over the British company Distribution Planning Software International Ltd. (DPS). In June 2017, Porsche Automobil Holding bought 97 percent of the shares in the PTV Group for over 300 million euros. In August 2019, Peter Overmann started as Chief Technology Officer on the PTV Executive Board. He also temporarily took over the position of CEO after Vincent Kobesen left the company on July 31 at his own request after 30 years of service. In September 2019, Klaus Lechner joined the Executive Board as Chief Financial Officer . Christian U. Haas took over the chairmanship of PTV on November 1, 2019.

Companies

PTVplanung Transport Verkehr AG is part of the Porsche Group. The company is divided into the three business areas of traffic programs ( traffic planning , traffic models , traffic simulation, public transport ), transport consulting ( traffic planning and technology, traffic control , public transport, integrated traffic concepts for sustainable mobility ) and logistics programs (planning and optimization of transports and sales structures, programs for route and tour planning, geoplaning , geo-marketing , visualization on digital maps), according to the TU Dresden, whose transport science faculty contributed to the development of a tool.

The company has offices in Australia, Asia Pacific, Benelux, Brazil, China, Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Latin America, the Middle East, Austria, Poland, Scandinavia, Spain, South Africa and the USA. With PTV Vision , PTV AG claims to be the market leader in the areas of traffic modeling and calculation of traffic flows: According to the manufacturer, over 2000 customers in more than 90 countries use the office package. According to a study by Manager Magazin , PTV ranks among the top 1000 international market leaders in Germany.

Projects

PTV won the tender for the new European transport model. The main task of the project is the development of TRIMODE, a comprehensive multimodal transport model that maps the entire freight and passenger transport in Europe. At the same time, it takes into account economic factors that generate this transport demand. In addition, the model answers questions about the effects of transport on energy supply and the environment. With PTV Visum as the central element, TRIMODE is being developed as a stable and integrated system that can be used operationally in a variety of ways.

As a member of the Corporate Partnership Board (CPB), PTV has been working with the International Transport Forum (ITF) of the OECD for several years  . For example, in 2015 PTV B. participated in the Lisbon Study , which examined the effects of shared, autonomous mobility in urban traffic.

For the Formula 1 racetrack in Abu Dhabi , the Yas Marina Circuit , PTV created a multimodal traffic simulation for the arrival and departure routes using the traffic planning software PTV Vision. This simulation captured all types of traffic in a single model. With VISSIM the behavior was the Formula 1 visitors are shown under the bleachers.

In 2008 the company supported the Karlsruhe open-air festival "DAS FEST" with a pedestrian simulation for escape routes. The VISSIM software module was the basis for the information film. The module enables realistic interaction between people at major events and between people and vehicles.

As part of the model project "Congestion Free Hessen 2015", PTV AG is providing the technology for the traffic information system "Dynamic Information and Navigation Assistance" (DIANA). The traffic situation data is not transmitted from stationary measuring points, but from selected road users via their mobile phones using the floating car data method.

As part of "Düsseldorf in Motion" (Dmotion), the company planned control strategies for the Düsseldorf metropolitan area and developed a concept for a continuous traffic situation in the transition area. In addition, the company set up a traffic information service that records and forecasts the traffic situation in North Rhine-Westphalia's capital in real time.

In addition, the company is involved in other systems for traffic management, traffic forecasting and traffic information. Among other things for the traffic management center (VMZ) Berlin, the Ruhrpilot and the traffic information on the website BayernInfo.de of the state of Bavaria.

research

PTV is active in national and international research projects. The subject areas include active mobility, autonomous driving, assessment and maintenance of transport infrastructure, electromobility, mobility in times of social change, multimodal passenger transport and urban logistics.

PTV coordinated the research project BESTFACT, Best Practice Factory for Freight Transport, in which the researchers collected, developed, evaluated and disseminated best practice examples for city logistics, green logistics, co-modality and eFreight for four years.

PTV coordinated the research project MODULUSHCA (Modular Logistics Units in Shared Co-modal Networks), the aim of which was to better network the logistics industry in the European Union, in close coordination with North American partners and the international Physical Internet Initiative.

The research project “iHub: Intelligent IT-supported platform for electromobile, sustainable and efficient infrastructure and fleet management of logistics hubs”, funded by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs, represents a holistic approach that is being promoted by the project partners, including PTV. As part of iHub, an integrated IT platform is being set up that links both the planning and optimization of vehicle fleet and energy management.

As part of the metropol-E joint project funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, PTV has further developed the idea of a "settlement-oriented model for the sustainable development and promotion of e-charging infrastructure" (SIMONE) proposed by the National Electromobility Platform (NPE).

The company is involved in the FLOW (Furthering Less Congestion by Creating Opportunities For More Walking and Cycling) project, which deals with urban road traffic and examines the role of pedestrians and cyclists. PTV works out the FLOW congestion assessment method with a multimodal congestion definition and a number of multimodal indicators that have direct and other consequences for evaluating the effectiveness of pedestrian and bicycle traffic measures in reducing congestion.

At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2010 in Hanover, PTV presented the results of the “Intelligent Cargo Systems” study. The research study was carried out on behalf of the European Commission and deals with the topic of "intelligent freight transport". It shows future scenarios for the years 2020 and 2035. In doing so, it takes into account the increasing requirements in the area of efficient and sustainable logistics as well as the increasingly complex planning for global transport chains across all modes of transport.

Since 2008, PTV has been dealing with the topic of megacities as part of the project “Climate and Energy in a Complex Transformation Process towards Sustainability in Hyderabad”. By 2013, among other things, planning bases are to be worked out for the city as a whole. The design of the transport system and the transport infrastructure should then be decided on this basis.

For the CVIS project supported by the European Commission, PTV has developed a new routing method for urban traffic. The strategic routing process can also take traffic recommendations from cities and municipalities into account. The specific test field was Dortmund.

Together with 28 partners, the company is involved in the research initiative AKTIV (“Adaptive and Cooperative Technologies for Intelligent Transport”). This has set itself the goal of making future traffic safer and smoother. The aim is to create new driver assistance systems and information technologies as well as software solutions for efficient traffic management. PTV developed a network for this in which the traffic management system communicates with information functions in the vehicle and the infrastructure.

PTV is a consortium partner of the research project for urban and autonomous goods logistics funded by the European Union and the state of Baden-Württemberg , efeuCampus in Bruchsal . PTV is responsible for the transport processes on the site and the route planning of the autonomous vehicles within the framework.

Awards

Since 2007, the company has been awarding the so-called PTV Vision Scientific Award every two years. This competition is aimed at scientists who work with the VISUM and VISSIM software packages for their research work. In 2007 the prize, endowed with 2,500 euros, went to Wilco Burghout from the Catholic University in Stockholm and Johan Wahlstedt from the engineering firm Rambol. They got it for their work on “Hybrid Traffic Simulation with Adaptive Signal Control”. In 2009 he received the Guide Gentile award from the University of Rome for its newly developed algorithm LUCE (Linear User Cost Equilibrium).

For its international market leadership, PTV was awarded the World Market Leader Seal of the German Standards Editions publishing house and an independent jury in January 2011.

In 2014, the company for Truck Parking Europe, an app for the Europe-wide search for truck parking spaces, received the Telematics Award in the "Best Innovation" category.

In 2016, the company received the Telematics Award in the "Warehouse Logistics" category for its software for dynamic flow control, the PTV Drive & Arrive Arrival Board.

In 2017, at the SITL logistics trade fair, the company was recognized as the best innovation in the “Information Technologies and Systems” category for its dynamic arrival board management system for the PTV Drive & Arrive online service.

In 2017 the analysts from Frost & Sullivan honored the PTV Group with the "Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Award 2017". The management consultancy is thus honoring PTV's overall performance in terms of customer value and loyalty in the logistics sector.

criticism

In October 2007, the stock corporation was given the negative Big Brother Award in the “Technology” category for “ its system for the individual calculation of motor vehicle insurance” with the pay-as-you-drive system , because it “records the route and driving behavior and sent to the insurance company ". PTV accepted the award the following year.
