Privacy International (PI) is an international human rights organization founded in 1990 with headquarters in London , England . She describes herself as the guardian of citizens' privacy vis-à-vis the state and business enterprises .

Since 1998, the association has presented the Big Brother Award annually to organizations that have blatantly violated people's privacy.

Since 1997, the organization, in collaboration with the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), has conducted annual surveys to determine how much privacy nations allow their residents. The study examines all EU countries and 11 other selected countries. The degree of privacy is rated with a numerical value from 1 to a maximum of 5. Germany, France and Austria recorded the greatest decline in 2007.

Data trading

In November 2018, Privacy International filed a complaint against some data dealers on the basis of the General Data Protection Regulation . The appeal is directed against two common data distributor ( Acxiom and Oracle ) and five data distributors operating in the fields of advertising and credit scoring (the advertising technology company Criteo , Quantcast and tapad and the credit bureaus Equifax and Experian ).

Privacy International is supported and funded by various foundations, academic institutions and non-governmental organizations. You get, for example, by the Soros Foundation , the American Civil Liberties Union , the Electronic Privacy Information Center , the Fund for Constitutional Government , the Stern Foundation , the Privacy Foundation , the German Marshall Fund and the University of New South Wales funds or are supported to a lesser extent by private donations.
