The Federal Office of Transport FOT ( French Office fédéral des transports OFT , Italian Ufficio federale dei trasporti UFT , Romansh Uffizi federal da traffic UFT ; German name until 1979 Eidgenössisches Amt für Verkehr EAV ) is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation . It deals with public transport in Switzerland, be it railways, cable cars, trolley buses , buses and ships. It implements the policy of the government ( Federal Council ), parliament and the Swiss electorate ( sovereign ) in the field of public transport. The FOT is subordinate to the Federal Department for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication DETEC . 276 (as of summer 2009) employees work in the office in the five departments of business administration and organization, infrastructure, finance, security and politics. Peter Füglistaler, who was previously a member of the SBB management, has been the director since June 2010 . His predecessor, Max Friedli, headed the office from 1994 to May 2010.

The FOT is committed to efficient, environmentally friendly, safe and attractive public transport by issuing and monitoring regulations for its safety. This results in close cooperation with public transport companies ( licensed transport companies KTU ) and politics. The office wants to continuously improve the quality of public transport through optimal framework conditions. This is intended to support an environmentally friendly transport policy aimed at reducing exhaust gases and noise emissions. In addition, in accordance with the Equal Opportunities for People with Disabilities Act (BehiG), public transport should also be barrier-free (suitable for the disabled and senior citizens) by 2023 at the latest . The focus for the next few decades will be on the four major projects ( Bahn 2000 , NEAT , HGV connections and noise abatement of the railway network) of the FinöV Fund (federal decision on the construction and financing of public transport infrastructure projects) . The office is actively involved in shifting road freight traffic to rail and realizing the decisions made by politics.

Supervisory authority

The Federal Office of Transport is the supervisory authority for public transport. It controls public transport companies for compliance with the regulations. On the one hand, this happens through unannounced operational controls. On the other hand, this supervisory role also comes into play when dealing with planning permits, concessions and the issuing of operating permits. The Federal Office of Transport is also in contact with industry and supports the development and testing of new products for public transport. The aim is to present safe public transport to the population.

Designer

Another important task includes that of the designer. The office orders certain services (such as routes) from public transport companies based on political requirements. The FOT does not plan any infrastructure construction; the public transport companies do that themselves. However, these projects will be approved provided they comply with the guidelines of transport policy. In order for the transport companies to make ends meet financially, the BAV distributes the subsidies granted by the federal government in the amount of 3.2 billion Swiss francs (2005). The FOT thus makes a significant contribution to the design of the public transport system in Switzerland.

Further tasks

Public relations work, answering parliamentary approaches to public transport and responding to questions and suggestions from the population are among the tasks of the office.
