The Flixbus DACH GmbH is a formerly independent, 2011 as the MFB MeinFernbus GmbH founded Fernbusunternehmen based in Berlin ; Under the name MeinFernbus , the company offered long-distance bus services in Germany and neighboring countries between 2012 and 2016. In 2015 MeinFernbus merged with Flixbus , initially while retaining both brand names as MeinFernbus FlixBus . In 2016 the MFB MeinFernbus was taken over as a subsidiary of Flixbus under the new name FlixBus DACH , which changed its name to FlixMobility . Since then, the company has offered long-distance bus services exclusively under the Flixbus brand , and the MeinFernbus brand name was discontinued.

history

MeinFernbus started operating in April 2012 with the Freiburg im Breisgau - Titisee - Friedrichshafen - Munich line , on which several daily direct connections were offered. On August 10, 2012, a second line , known as the Übersee-Linie , was opened from Munich via Friedrichshafen and Meersburg and - using the Konstanz – Meersburg car ferry - across Lake Constance to Konstanz , which has since been extended to Zurich . At the beginning of November 2012, the company announced an expansion of the offer to a total of eight long-distance routes.

The reform of the federal German Passenger Transport Act (PBefG) and the consequent elimination of protecting competition on the rail passenger transport services of the Deutsche Bahn have Fernbusunternehmen since 1 January 2013 significantly better opportunities to expand its line operations. The first long-distance bus connection from MFB MeinFernbus, which was approved under the new law, was the extension of the Frankfurt am Main - Leipzig line to Berlin . By July 2013, the MFB MeinFernbus route network had been expanded to a total of 21 routes. As early as January 2013, around 85 cities in Germany and seven cities abroad ( Zurich , Strasbourg , Luxembourg , Innsbruck , Prague , Merano , Milan ) were integrated into the company's regular services. As a rule, there is only one stop in the cities served. In some cities such as Berlin, Dresden , Konstanz or Arnsberg , MFB MeinFernbus offered passengers the opportunity to get on and off at various stops. MFB did not operate its lines itself, but - like Flixbus - used various medium-sized bus operators as subcontractors . The license holder in accordance with the PBefG and thus the passengers' contractual partner was not the subcontractor, but MeinFernbus.

In July 2013, MeinFernbus announced that the one millionth passenger had started a journey with the company. In mid-August, the 100th “MeinFernbus” was unveiled, which was designed true to the motto “Drive green” and in accordance with the cooperation with myclimate . By October 2014 MeinFernbus had carried over eight million passengers and had already put three anniversary buses on the road.

In 2014 the company is said to have made a profit of 1–2 million euros with a turnover of approx. 100 million euros .

In April 2015, the number of long-distance bus routes operated was 264. Two years after it was founded, MeinFernbus was the market leader in the German long-distance bus market with a good 38% market share.

On January 7, 2015, MeinFernbus and FlixBus announced that the two companies would merge and merge their line networks. At the same time, the goal of increased expansion into neighboring European countries was formulated. In the non-German-speaking countries, the "FlixBus" brand should be used. As a result of the merger, Munich-based FlixBus GmbH was converted into a holding company for various national companies, under whose roof MFB MeinFernbus GmbH was to function as a subsidiary for the German-speaking market in the future. On March 1, 2016, was MFB MeinFernbus GmbH in the subsidiary Flixbus DACH GmbH renamed, the parent company was parallel Flixbus GmbH in the FlixMobility GmbH renamed. The founders of the “MeinFernbus” brand switched from management to the advisory board. Because of its international presence, the “MeinFernbus FlixBus” brand has also been replaced by the international “FlixBus” brand in German-speaking countries.

marketing

The motto “Drive green!” Is not only intended to establish a reference to the green color of the corporate identity, but also to suggest a better environmental balance compared to rail and motorized individual transport. The company was certified as climate neutral for 2013 by the myclimate environmental foundation . In addition, MFB enables a voluntary increase in the fare, which is donated to myclimate and is intended to compensate for the greenhouse gases produced by the bus journey. MeinFernbus was awarded the myclimate Award 2012 and the international bus planner sustainability award 2013 for these activities.

criticism

In April 2014 MeinFernbus GmbH was awarded the negative Big Brother Award in the transport category because the company had a special and lasting impact on the privacy of its customers. The reason given in the laudation is above all the obligation currently provided by the company in its general terms and conditions (GTC) to identify yourself with a valid official photo ID when using an online ticket when starting the journey. There is also criticism that, according to its data protection regulations, MeinFernbus is not only allowed to pass on payment-related data for billing tickets, but also telephone numbers and other user information that is not relevant for the processing of payments. In view of the fact that some other long-distance bus companies also require an ID card to be carried, it was precisely these data transfer options that made MeinFernbus eligible for this anti-award, according to the laudatory speech.

In the test by Stiftung Warentest , MeinFernbus took 6th out of 9th place in July 2014 with the grade “Good (2.2)”.
