It mainly serves the cabaret with comedy, cabaret, satire, poetry slam and improv theater and quickly gained national fame. In addition to proven artists, young and still unknown artists are constantly being discovered and promoted. The casino theater can also be rented for private events.

history

The history of the building goes back to March 1850, when the planning of the Winterthur casino company began for a cultural center in Winterthur. Twelve years later, in December 1862, the first inn was opened and the house was opened the following year. The building was used for theater and ballet performances, and the Winterthur Music College also used the premises.

The casino company was liquidated 12 years after it opened . The theater was taken over by the city, which undertook to continue the theater in the previous sense. In 1934 the casino theater was badly damaged by fire and only reopened in 1936. With the reopening, the Stadttheater Winterthur also moved into the property, which had mainly performed guest performances by the Zürcher Schauspielhaus until 1969 and moved to the Theater am Stadtgarten in 1979. From 1971 to 1980 the casino theater served the Theater Kanton Zürich as a training facility.

After the two theaters moved away, the building was little used. The city considered various renovation and future plans, none of which were implemented. In 1996 the building was listed and put up for sale. In 1999, well-known Swiss comedy artists such as Mike Müller , Patrick Frey and Viktor Giacobbo joined forces to form an initiative group that wanted to turn the casino theater into a national center for the comedy and cabaret scene . On March 21, 2000, the sovereign approved the sale with 73.3% yes votes. The house was renovated by a joint-stock company founded for this purpose and has since been rented to an operating company. In 2002 the casino theater was opened in its current form.
