Rena Tangens (* in Bielefeld ) is a German data protection activist , internet pioneer and artist .

In 1984 she founded the art project and the Art d'Ameublement gallery together with padeluun . She is co-founder and chairwoman of the fundamental rights and data protection association Digitalcourage (formerly FoeBuD) and co-organizer and jury member of the German Big Brother Awards , which have been presented annually in Bielefeld since 2000.

biography

In 1984 she started the art project Art d'Ameublement together with padeluun , which was inspired by Erik Satie . She curated the Public Domain monthly culture and technology event series . In 1988 she and Barbara Thoens founded Haecksen , an association of female members of the Chaos Computer Club . From 1989 she worked on the ZERBERUS mailbox program (see Z-Netz ), whose interface she helped design, and the BIONIC mailbox.

Rena Tangens lives and works in Bielefeld and is an honorary member of the Chaos Computer Club . It supports the surveillance-critical data protection demonstration freedom instead of fear .

Criminal complaint against the federal government

On February 3, 2014, against the background of the global surveillance and espionage affair, several groups and people filed a criminal complaint against the German government . Among them were Rena Tangens, the Chaos Computer Club , the International League for Human Rights , the data protection association Digitalcourage , Rolf Gössner , Constanze Kurz and padeluun. The federal government actively carried out and supported illegal secret service agent activities, committed violations of personal life and secrecy and, through cooperation with the British GCHQ secret service and the American National Security Agency, hindered investigations against them.

The presidents of the Federal Intelligence Service , the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Military Counter-Intelligence Service are named, who are "entangled in the nationwide secret service activities and involved in the global research system and data excesses with endless data transfers". Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière are explicitly mentioned as responsible for the "alleged accomplices and accomplices" of German secret services. The involvement of German secret services through the delivery of data or the participation, for example, in the XKeyscore spy program, requires clarification. With the planned investigation committee of the Bundestag Gössner saw the problem in the secrecy, because ultimately only the Snowden revelations are public.

Awards

  • In 2004, Rena Tangens received the evolutionary cell award for padeluun .
  • In 2007, Rena Tangens received a grant from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as an artist .
  • In 2015, Rena Tangens was awarded the VZBV's Federal Consumer Protection Prize. She received the award "Personality of Consumer Protection 2015".
  • In March 2016 Tangens received the Bielefeld Women's Prize, an award from the Federation of Women's Associations and the regional newspaper Neue Westfälische .
  • In April 2018, it was decided to award the City of Bielefeld the Badge of Honor to Rena Tangens and padeluun . The reason given was that they had done their job for data protection and human rights for the well-being and reputation of the city of Bielefeld.
