Constanze Kurz (born March 2, 1974 in East Berlin ) is a German computer scientist , non-fiction author and spokeswoman for the Chaos Computer Club (CCC). She has particularly emerged in the field of data protection .

Life

After childhood and youth in Berlin, she first studied economics there before turning to computer science. After studying computer science, she devoted herself to research focusing on surveillance technology, ethics , data protection and data security . From 2005 to 2011, Kurz was a research assistant in the Computer Science in Education and Society group of Professor Wolfgang Coy at the Humboldt University in Berlin . She published her dissertation on voting computers with the title Electronic election workers in democracy: the status quo in political elections in 2013. Until September 2014, Kurz worked as a scientific project manager at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences , and since February 2015 she has been in Part-time member of the editorial team at Netzpolitik.org .

Kurz is involved in the Society for Computer Science (GI), there since 2003 in the Computer Science & Ethics department and as deputy spokeswoman for the management group of the GI Department of Computer Science and Society, and is a member of the advisory board of the Forum Computer Scientists for Peace and Social Responsibility . In the Chaos Computer Club e. V., the largest European hacker association , she is a volunteer spokesperson.

The left faction named Kurz as an expert for the Enquête Commission Internet and Digital Society of the German Bundestag . As a technical expert, she advised the Federal Constitutional Court on the complaint proceedings against voting computers , data retention , the anti-terror database and the state Trojan in the BKA Act .

She was a member of the jury of the ideas competition "Forgetting on the Internet", which was carried out by the network policy project group of the Federal Ministry of the Interior until August 31, 2011.

In February 2012 the non-party Kurz was nominated by the Greens for the office of data protection officer in the state of Thuringia, but lost with 34 of the 82 valid votes against Lutz Hasse , who was set up by the governing coalition of CDU and SPD , who received 45 votes.

Kurz is the editor and author of numerous works (see below). In her blogs, essays and, since 2010, in her bi-weekly column From the engine room in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, she draws attention to security gaps and monopolies in the field of new technologies and at the same time shows democratic alternatives.
