padeluun , who only appears publicly under this pseudonym, is a German artist and network activist who advocates digital civil rights and is an expert on the Bundestag's Internet Enquete Commission.

In 1984 he founded the art project and the Art d'Ameublement gallery together with Rena Tangens . He is co-founder and chairman of the fundamental rights and data protection association Digitalcourage (formerly FoeBuD), member of the working group for data retention and one of the organizers and jury member of the German Big Brother Awards , which have been presented annually in Bielefeld since 2000 . He lives in Bielefeld and Berlin .

Projects and honors

At the end of the 1970s, padeluun was active in the Düsseldorf New Wave and Berlin punk scene as a performance artist and as a Super 8 filmmaker. He was a sporadic member of Minus Delta t and is one of the protagonists in Jürgen Teipel's novel Verschwende Deine Jugend . In 1976 padeluun gave up its real name: “At the age of 18 I decided to put my old life aside and start over - as an artist. To represent this new beginning, I have adopted a new name, ”said padeluun about the reason for the name change. In 1981 he appeared at the Festival Genialer Dilletanten in Berlin's Tempodrom. He has been working in Bielefeld since 1984 and became known through a number of activities and projects. His project Art d'Ameublement (together with Rena Tangens) was awarded the special prize of the Marl Video Art Prize in 1984. In 1987 he took part in the performance program of documenta 8 together with the ASA group . Two years later, padeluun was part of a group of artists and pioneers of electronic art who presented Van Gogh TV at Ars Electronica in Linz in 1989 . In 1990 they showed the Hotel Pompino project at Ars Electronica .

Padeluun is an honorary member of the Chaos Computer Club .

In April 2018, it was decided to award the City of Bielefeld the Badge of Honor to Rena Tangens and padeluun. The reason given was that they had done their job for data protection and human rights for the well-being and reputation of the city of Bielefeld.

activity

Parallel to his artistic engagement, he founded the company Zerberus GmbH and worked on the further development of the software of the same name for the Z-Netz and the CL-Netz . These two mailbox networks served in the 1980s and increasingly in the 1990s for electronic communication with a counter-public of initiatives and activists from environmental protection , human rights and other topics. To operate the mailbox BIONIC as one of the nodes of the Z-Netz, he founded the association FoeBuD e. V. (renamed to Digitalcourage in 2012 ). In the course of the Yugoslav wars, FoeBuD went into the war region as an actor and built up an electronic network on the technical basis of the Cerberus software across the fronts between people of the warring peoples. In doing so he developed into a peace and political activist. The association and he subsequently became a major player in the network policy debate, particularly on data protection . In 1995 he appeared at the "Interfiction" event in Kassel and put the net theses up for discussion. Since 2000, FoeBuD, today Digitalcourage, has been giving the German Big Brother Awards .

Demand for the abolition of the secret services

According to padeluun, secret services are counterproductive. Instead of reforming the BND, he generally questions the secret services. The reform allows the secret service even more than before to tap into Internet hubs in Germany. With regard to the protection of the constitution, he said: "Institutes can do that, the Antifa does better research on the right-wing scene."

Opinion on internet monopolies and social media

In April 2019 padeluun took the following position in connection with the copyright reform of the European Union for the Internet : “We have allowed the Googles and Facebooks of this world to spread on the Internet . We have completely failed to design the networks in such a way that they can work. There is nothing social there, even if we talk about social media. It's about generating as much data as possible from users and turning it into money and power. "
