Tilman Baumgärtel (* 1966 in Würzburg ) is a German author, media scientist and journalist . He is a professor of media theory in the design department at the Mainz University of Applied Sciences .

Life

From 2005 to 2009 he taught media and film studies at the University of the Philippines in Manila . From 2009 to 2012 he worked for the German Academic Exchange Service ( DAAD ) at the Royal University of Phnom Penh in Cambodia in the Department of Media and Communication . He has been teaching media theory at the Mainz University of Applied Sciences since 2014 and was appointed professor for media theory there in 2015.

Tilman Baumgärtel has published on media culture, net art , computer games , independent cinema in Southeast Asia and the German filmmaker Harun Farocki .

He was the organizer of the Asian Edition conference . A Conference on Media Piracy in South East Asia and most recently published texts on the theory of the Internet . He is currently leading the implementation of a DFG project through the artist group Van Gogh TV and their documenta project Piazza Virtuale.

As a journalist he has been writing for the Berlin daily newspaper , Die Zeit , the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , telepolis , the Berliner Zeitung and other German and international newspapers and magazines since the early 1990s .
