history

Sculpture “Sphere 'arcanum rerum'” in front of the main entrance

The history of the Hans Ehrenberg School is closely linked to the early development of the Sennestadt . When the large number of refugees from the former eastern regions of the German Empire had to find a new home after the Second World War , new settlements were built all over Germany, including the Sennestadt in the area of the municipality of Senne II near Bielefeld.

After the Evangelical Church of Westphalia had already had good experience with the establishment of the Söderblom grammar school in the Espelkamp-Mittwald refugee settlement , it decided to also found a grammar school in the Sennestadt under its sponsorship. Hans Bernhard Reichow , who was also in charge of the construction of the Sennestadt, was commissioned with the architectural planning . He owes the characteristic wave shape of the auditorium roof, which has become the symbol of the school.

For Easter in 1962, Karl Heinz Potthast was appointed head of the new school. The evangelical theologian and resistance fighter against National Socialism, Hans Philipp Ehrenberg, was the godfather of the school name . In keeping with the ecumenical philosophy represented by Ehrenberg , the school should be open to students of all denominations. After classes had already started on April 25 of the same year in the rooms of the Matthias Claudius House in Sennestadt, the opening of the new grammar school was celebrated on April 30 in the hall of the same house. Construction of the new school building began on September 1, 1962, the foundation stone was laid on December 20, 1962. In the following years the number of students and teachers rose rapidly, so that in the 1967/68 school year 622 children attended the school. The number of students soon exceeded the 1,000 mark, so that a new extension was necessary.

In 2001 , the school hit the headlines when a school's own card for cashless payment was introduced in the cafeteria and the high school received the negative Big Brother Award in the “Regional” category.

Immediately in front of the school, the sculpture " Sphere 'arcanum rerum" "was set up in 2002 ; it was created by Jörg Bochow , University of Giebichenstein . It is a ball made of iron and stainless steel , which can be set in motion very easily ; this causes a chime to sound from inside the ball .

Christian self-image

The Hans Ehrenberg School is particularly characterized by its liberal Christian self-image. In the school program, the following is quoted from the "Basic order for church schools sponsored by the Evangelical Church of Westphalia":

" The Evangelical Church sees its educational mandate based on the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and perceives it under the promise of this message. That is why it is committed to the spirit of freedom and love in all educational activities. Its educational goal is to help young people To help people to find their destiny as human beings in responsibility for themselves and the creation of God. Wherever pupils, teachers, mothers and fathers meet in this spirit of freedom and love, there is a lively school community. "

Religion also plays a special role in school life, more on this under study groups and events .

Facilities

Auditorium

The auditorium is located in a wing of the school and can be reached directly from the entrance hall. Due to the special construction, the auditorium is characterized by good acoustics . The hall has 650 seats and was once equipped with modern sound and lighting technology. However, these days this is largely no longer functional. With the renovation of the auditorium in 2012, some lighting elements that once provided a very pleasant atmosphere were removed. The many events, which often require complex lighting, are implemented by the school's own technology company, HES-TEC S-GmbH. A Yamaha C5 grand piano is available for concerts .

Media library

In addition to around 12,000 media (books, encyclopedias, magazines, DVDs, etc.), the students also have a number of Internet workstations, group tables and a reading corner with a sofa. The media library is open almost the entire school day and also serves as a self-study center for the students.

Breaktime / cafeteria

The school cafeteria is located at the transition between the old school building and the new extension . The cafeteria is run by the Eckardtsheim branch of the von Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel as a professional integration project.

In May 2020 the cafeteria was replaced by a cafeteria. Most of the money for the construction was generated by the students themselves at a school festival in the summer of 2017. There is also a new caterer with LKS, but the disabled keep their jobs.

Leisure center

The leisure center is located in the basement of the upper school wing and is used by upper school students as a place to stay during breaks and free periods. A canteen was housed here until the end of the 1990s . The design of the rooms is taken over by the student council. From October 31, 2016, the leisure center was closed and completely renovated in connection with the new chemistry rooms one floor above after years of planning. It got a ceiling including modern and bright lighting. Furthermore, the walls were painted and the interior was renewed. In January 2017 it was released again and can be used again as a work and leisure space.

Green classroom

The green classroom is an area separated from one of the school playgrounds, where school classes can conduct outdoor classes in the summer.

Sports facilities

In 1993, the school's triple gymnasium was badly damaged by arson . After an extensive renovation, the building was released a few months later. In addition to this main gym, there is a sports and gymnastics hall with fitness equipment, as well as an outdoor sports facility for athletics and various ball games (including beach sports).

Working groups and events

religion

Religious instruction is particularly important at the Hans Ehrenberg School. As a compulsory subject up to qualification phase 1, it is an integral part of the timetable. Diakonie courses are also offered in the eighth and ninth grades, for example . In addition to the activities in class, religion also plays an important role in the rest of the school week. For grades five and six there are compulsory school devotions every six weeks. In the middle and upper grades, the devotions are distributed among the years so that each student only has to attend two devotions per year. In the tenth grade, religious education can be replaced by participation in philosophy classes. In grade twelve, neither of the two subjects has to be taken. The church services are organized by the students and religion teachers. Every four years there is an ecumenical religious school week for grades nine to twelve. Essentially, this week is about belief orientation and help in life.

Music, art and theater

Students with a musical interest are encouraged to attend the school. The support begins in the fifth grade with a play group, a working group, in which initial experience is to be gained in a small orchestra . There is a fifth grade choir, a lower grade choir for grades six and seven, and an upper grade choir that includes everything from grade eight. Other working groups in the field of music are a big band , a guitar ensemble and of course the OrcHESter. There is also a wind class for each year, where students can learn to play a wood or brass instrument. The common lessons end after year six or, if desired, after year seven, but the students can then continue to take lessons.

In addition to the musical working groups, working groups are also offered in the fields of art and theater, the results of which are presented in regular art exhibitions and theater performances. Literature courses are offered in year 11; They show their results not only in the school's auditorium, but also at the Bielefeld School Theater Week, which takes place every two years. In the years 2009 (with the in-house production "LebensMinusGefühl"), 2011 (with "[only] [silent]", freely based on W. Gombrowicz '"Yvonne, the Burgundy Princess"), and 2013 (with "Peer Gynt - Be enough for yourself! ") The 1st prize will be won.

The artistic areas are brought together in regular large-scale performances. In addition to the design of the stage set , the drama and musical accompaniment are also completely organized by the students. For example in 2001 in the self-written musical Street of Hope, in 2003 in the performance of the Webber musical Jesus-Christ-Superstar , in 2005 with the dance of the vampires or in 2007 with a musical adaptation of the film Sister Act . In 2012 the musical “Fame” was shown in four performances. The preparation and rehearsal time was one year.

A special feature of all HES musicals is the fact that everything is provided by the students and teachers. From the musicians to actors, set construction and elaborate lighting and sound technology are provided by committed students.

The HEStival has been held annually on the grounds of the Hans Ehrenberg School since 2001 . This is a concert that is organized by students from the school and on which mainly school bands from the region perform. The musical focus is on rock , metal , punk and hardcore , but hip-hop crews also perform here regularly.

Sports

There are working groups for athletics , volleyball , basketball and dance . In addition to these events, there are also regular football tournaments , national youth games and participation in cross-school championships (e.g. city championships).

Student support

Gifted students have the opportunity to skip a grade. The students receive special professional and social support.

Project weeks

Every year in September or October there are project weeks at the school, in which the respective grades create a wide variety of projects.

Technik-AG / HES-TEC S-GmbH

In a school with more than 1000 students, a large number of events of all kinds have to be technically supervised every year - from theater performances, concerts or musical projects in the auditorium to cultural events or parties organized by the student council.

All of this is the task of school technology, which was formerly active as a technology working group for many years. Over time, the equipment was expanded and it soon became clear that not only school events can be looked after, but that equipment and experience can also be used for larger engagements.

Ultimately, this is how the HES-TEC Veranstaltungsstechnik Schüler-GmbH came about. They no longer only work on school and auditorium events, but also offer support for small to medium-sized events in and around Bielefeld. In addition, the student company project at the school is a very good opportunity for the students involved to orientate themselves towards studying, training or a career after graduating from high school, promotes the development of initiative, personal responsibility and provides an insight into entrepreneurial activity. Starting with the development of statutes, contracts and general terms and conditions , the correct keeping of a cash book or regular shareholders' meetings are part of everyday life at the Schüler-GmbH.

Support association

The " Association of Friends and Supporters of the High School Hans-Ehrenberg-Schule eV ", which has existed since 1965, has around 360 members and supports the school primarily in creating new teaching and learning opportunities. According to its own statement, the sponsoring association is one of the four percent of all federal German sponsoring associations that can support their school with at least 5,000 euros a year.

Partner and sister schools

The French school Saint-Alyre in Clermont-Ferrand is the partner school. The partnership is maintained with an annual school exchange.

In addition to the Hans Ehrenberg School, the Evangelical Church of Westphalia is the sponsor of six other schools, including four grammar schools, two secondary schools and one comprehensive school.

Another partnership exists with the German school Talitha Kumi in Beit Jala , Palestine. Since 2012, students from Palestine have been attending the HES in Sennestadt. The return visit took place in March 2013. In view of the critical security situation to this day, this was widely discussed by parents, teachers and students. In preparation for the exchange, mandatory weekly events of 90 minutes each are required for six months. In these, the students are specifically prepared for topics such as the Israel-Palestine conflict and the social details of Palestinian culture. The plan is to keep the rhythm of visits like this.
