A carillon is a mechanical construction attached to or in historical buildings, which generates melodies by means of bells at set times or on request and often has a mechanically moving figurative representation. The bells can be made of metal, porcelain , ceramic or even glass.

For historical technical reasons, carillons are often found on astronomical clocks or in connection with bell towers . In contrast to the carillon , they are usually not used for manual play. The sound generation by means of bells instead of tongues also distinguishes them from the folk music box, the music box .
