Barbara Potthast

Barbara Potthast (born June 17, 1956 in Gadderbaum , Bielefeld ) is a German historian .

Barbara Potthast graduated from the Hans-Ehrenberg-Schule in Bielefeld- Sennestadt in 1974 . From 1975 to 1982 she studied history and Hispanic studies in Cologne and Seville. In 1982 she passed the first state examination for teaching history and Spanish. From 1982 to 1986 she was a research assistant in the Iberian and Latin American Department of the Department of History at the University of Cologne . In 1986 she did her doctorate at the University of Cologne. She then worked there as a research assistant in the Department of Iberian and Latin American History. In 1992 she completed her habilitation in Iberian and Latin American history in Cologne. This was followed in 1992 by a substitute professor for Iberian and Latin American history at Cologne University. In the same year she became professor for general history with special focus on Iberian and Latin American history at Bielefeld University . Since 2000 she has been teaching as a professor at the University of Cologne and is head of the Iberian and Latin American departments of the History Department. She is co-editor of the yearbook on the history of Latin America .

Her research interests are family and gender history and the general social history of Latin America. Another focus is the history of photography on Latin America. Her research focuses on the history of Paraguay and Argentina as well as the history of the Caribbean coast. Potthast has been a corresponding member of the Academia Paraguaya de la Historia since 1998 . In 2011 she was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea .
