Talitha Kumi (Aramaic in Hebrew letters: טליתא קומי Ṭalīṯā Qūmī ; Arabic طاليثا قومي, DMG Ṭālīṯā Qūmī ; Greek ταλιθὰ κούμι ) in Bait Jala is a renowned school in the Palestinian autonomous region . In Talitha Kumi, around 900 pupils from kindergarten through twelfth grade are currently taught by over 50 teachers according to the Palestinian curriculum.
The name of the school refers to an incident told by the evangelist Mark: When the daughter of Jairus was raised from the dead, Jesus took the child by the hand and said: “Talitha Kumi! - that means: girl, I tell you, get up! ”( Mk 5,41 EU ) There used to be numerous diaconal institutions under the same name in Germany, e.g. B. the Magdalenasyl "Talitha kumi" in Niederlößnitz near Dresden.
history
- 1851 Theodor Fliedner , founder of the Diakonissenanstalt Kaiserswerth , built a children's home for Arab girls with the support of four deaconesses in Jerusalem , Ottoman Empire . The educational work on the female youth of Palestine, to which no one cared until now, began. The " Jerusalem Association " saw its task in founding, maintaining and promoting Protestant schools and congregations in the Holy Land.
- 1914 Due to the war of 1914/18, work had to be stopped entirely.
- 1925 Renewed return and opening of Talitha Kumi, which was discontinued in 1939 when the Second World War broke out . In 1949 the land was taken over by the Israelis.
- 1950 The Jerusalem Association gave the Diakoniewerk Kaiserswerth its community center in Beit Dschala for the school, which soon became too small after the expansion.
- 1959 A new Talitha Kumi was built about two kilometers from the old location, which was officially opened in 1961. At that time the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan became independent. Today five congregations, four schools and a boarding school for boys belong to this church in the part of the West Bank occupied by Israel . The leadership of the church has been an Arab bishop since 1979 ( Munib Younan since 1998 ).
- 1975 The Jerusalem Association and the school were taken over by the Berliner Missionswerk , which supports the parish and school work of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and arranges training sponsorships for Palestinian pupils.
- Since 1988, strikes and the Israeli military administration have repeatedly severely obstructed school operations and, in some cases, ordered school closings. School operations are suffering from the curfews ordered by the military administration.
structure
After completing the twelfth grade, students can take the Tauwjihi (Palestinian Abitur) and the German International Abitur examination (DIAP), which qualifies them to study at the university. The Tauwjihi is offered in two courses: Arts (social science course) or Science (natural science course). The school runs a boarding school. There is also a guest house on the site.
Extracurricular activities
In Talitha Kumi there is the only scout group of the Association of Christian Scouts and Boy Scouts (VCP) outside of Germany. The group is supported by the Israel / Middle East section of the VCP.
