He made his Abitur at the Hans-Ehrenberg-Schule in Bielefeld-Sennestadt . After Ewald Lienen and Sören Brandy , Schmidtgal was the third graduate of this school to establish himself in professional football.
Club career
Schmidtgal started playing football at FC Hövelriege and moved to SC Verl in the C-youth . On August 27, 2003 he made his debut in the men's division when he was substituted on in the 65th minute on the second match day of the Oberliga Westfalen season 2003/04 and his first goal in the 90th minute with the goal to make it 2: 3 scored. He was still used in this season for the youth and completed ten missions in the first team in the major league. In the new season after the end of his youth career he was a regular player and came to 29 missions with four goals. Schmidtgal performed well and aroused the interest of Marcel Koller , coach of VfL Bochum at the time , who signed him for the 2007/08 season. In Bochum Schmidtgal was first used in the reserve team, while he trained with the professionals who were playing in the Bundesliga at the time. After a short time without appearances in the professional team, Koller assigned him to the amateur team in the training area.
For the 2009/10 season Schmidtgal went to the second division Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . There he held a regular position in midfield. He scored his first professional goal on the 7th matchday to make the decisive 1-0 win against MSV Duisburg . In November 2010 he tore the biceps tendon in his knee in the home game against Arminia Bielefeld (3-0) and had to take a four-month break. On April 9, 2011 (29th matchday) he made his comeback in the game against Fortuna Düsseldorf . His contract with RW Oberhausen ran until June 30, 2011 and was not extended after relegation.
For the 2011/12 season he moved to SpVgg Greuther Fürth and received a two-year contract. With the Fürthern he rose to the end of the 2011/12 season in the Bundesliga , in which he made his debut on August 25, 2012 in the game against Bayern Munich under coach Mike Büskens . The SpVgg got down again at the end of the season. In addition, Schmidtgal was ousted on the left-back position by Abdul Rahman Baba . He then did not extend his contract in Fürth due to the lack of sporting prospects, and moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf for the 2013/14 season . He signed a contract valid until June 30, 2015, which was not renewed by the club at the end of the 2014/15 season .
From the 2015/16 season Schmidtgal was under contract with FSV Frankfurt . With the Hessen, he received a contract valid until 2017. In July 2015, he had a knee operation and was therefore unable to play a game for the FSV.
After he was relegated to the 3rd division with FSV Frankfurt, Schmidtgal ended his career in the summer of 2016.
