The second European venue was the Operettenhaus in Hamburg , where the German-language premiere took place on December 2, 2010. From December 9, 2012, the musical could be seen in Stuttgart , from December 3, 2013 in Oberhausen and from October 6, 2016 on a tour of Germany.

action

The less than successful lounge singer Deloris van Cartier witnesses a murder. Her married lover Curtis Shank, who is a prominent man in the underworld and responsible for the murder , instructs his followers to take them out.

Because Deloris is the only witness, after her escape, Lieutenant Eddie Souther hides her as sister Mary Clarence against her will in a convent. There, however, she has considerable problems getting used to it and is finally instructed by the Mother Superior to sing along in the nuns' choir, whose singing skills are not exactly edifying. But Mary Clarence is able to give the group a clear structure and becomes the leader of the choir, which she teaches the gospel of the Harlem tradition. The new program of the choir attracts many people to the church again. Finally, the Pope also learns about the group, which has now become famous, and announces his visit for a concert.

But before the nuns can please the Pope with their song, a photo in a newspaper article gives Curtis a clue about the whereabouts of his former lover. Shank and his accomplices Bones, TJ and Dinero sneak into the monastery dressed as nuns and try to kidnap Deloris. Thanks to her fellow sisters and Eddie Souther, who shows up in time, the project can be stopped and Shank and his accomplices arrested.

In the final scene, the sisters give the expected concert for the Pope. Sister Mary Clarence - in her habit , but without the veil - gives the choir a very successful performance one last time.

Venues

The play was initially performed in Pasadena and Atlanta, but did not make it to Broadway. Stage Entertainment then secured the rights for Europe and then brought the play to the stage first in London and a year later in Hamburg. As a result, there was a revised version on New York Broadway, which was more based on the version from London and Hamburg.

At the State Theater Linz the piece from September 2019 is shown in the open-air theater Tecklenburg the piece for the season 2020 is on the board.
