Glenn Slater

Glenn Slater (* 1968 ) is an American songwriter who has worked with Alan Menken and other composers for musicals . He has been nominated for a number of Tony Awards , including the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid in 2008 , Sister Act in 2011 , and School of Rock in 2016 , as well as a Grammy Award for the song I See the Light .

Career

Slater was born in Brooklyn , New York and grew up in East Brunswick, New Jersey . He graduated from Harvard University in 1990 . Slater wrote the lyrics for the Newyorkers Off-Broadway Revue in 2001 . He wrote the lyrics for six shows for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus .

His first projects with Menken were the film Home on the Range in 2004 and the stage version of the musical Sister Act 2006.

As the successor to Howard Ashman , who died in 1991 , he wrote the lyrics for the stage version of Walt Disney's The Little Mermaid in 2008 . He wrote the lyrics for Disney's animated film Tangled .

Awards

Slater received the Kleban Award for Lyrics, the ASCAP Foundation Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award, and the Jonathan Larson Award. He has been nominated for a Tony Award several times , including the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid in 2008 , Sister Act in 2011 , and School of Rock in 2016 .

He received a 2011 Grammy Award in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category for the song I See the Light from Tangled .
