The Leibniz ScienceCampus Tübingen (WCT) is an interdisciplinary research network that addresses the question of how the interaction between humans, computers and the environment can be supported.

Cooperation model

The basic idea behind the Leibniz ScienceCampus model is to network non-university and university research. The Leibniz ScienceCampus is a joint research network of at least one Leibniz institution, at least one university and the respective host country and, if applicable, the federal government.

The Leibniz ScienceCampus Tübingen was opened on April 20, 2009 as the first nationwide implementation of an initiative by the Leibniz Association . The Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media Tübingen set up this interdisciplinary research network together with the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , and the state of Baden-Württemberg is also part of the cooperation. As equal partners, the Eberhard Karls University and the Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media work on a clearly defined scientific question of common interest and complement each other with their special skills and different perspectives. The regional proximity, a common strategy and interdisciplinary research approaches related to topics, projects and methods are the strengths of the Leibniz ScienceCampus.

Thematic background

The Leibniz ScienceCampus Tübingen "Education in Information Environments" (2010-2016) was initiated by Friedrich Wilhelm Hesse and was shaped by the idea that educational processes in modern knowledge and information societies are no longer tied to institutional bodies such as schools, universities and further education institutions but take place throughout life at work and in leisure time, among friends and in the family. Digital and mobile media, above all the Internet, with their many applications offer a wealth of information and educational offers at low cost to acquire knowledge regardless of time and location. Social media helps individuals no longer just consume knowledge, but provide it themselves or actively exchange knowledge in communities. From the abundance of available information, users select the offers that are relevant to them according to their interests, needs and skills. In this way everyone creates their own personal “information environment”. The Leibniz ScienceCampus Tübingen "Education in Information Environments" was dedicated to this expanded concept of education. He deals with this variety of educational processes in formal and informal, in traditional and media-supported learning environments.

The continuation of the Leibniz ScienceCampus “Cognitive Interfaces” (2017–2020) focuses more specifically on the interface between an individual and the information environment. Human-computer interfaces help to support human cognition - but they also increasingly have cognitive properties themselves ( computational intelligence , machine learning ). In the Leibniz ScienceCampus “Cognitive Interfaces”, it is analyzed from a psychological and IT perspective, how interfaces have to be designed to support learning, problem solving or decision-making by individuals and groups. This involves, on the one hand, the question of the representation and selection of information in an interface (information design) and, on the other hand, the question of what actions are given for users of the interface ( interaction design ).

Structure and organization

The Leibniz ScienceCampus Tübingen consists of 14 research projects. The expertise of the around 45 participating scientists ranges from: psychology , computer science , educational science , sociology , economics , media studies to medicine . The Leibniz ScienceCampus Tübingen is managed by the Board of Directors - consisting of Ulrike Cress (Director of the Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media and Spokesperson for the ScienceCampus) and Bernd Engler (Rector of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen). The scientific evaluation is carried out by an internationally appointed scientific advisory board, consisting of five advisory board members. The Leibniz ScienceCampus is coordinated at the Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media . In addition to controlling and organizing the network, the tasks also include communication and the promotion of young talent. The corresponding strategy department deals with the scientific development of the Leibniz ScienceCampus Tübingen.

The aim of the Leibniz ScienceCampus is to bundle excellence, to conduct strategic, socially relevant and application-oriented research, to promote interdisciplinarity in topics, projects and methods and to strengthen the research profile. In this way, a closer and more strategically oriented network is created to further develop research on digital media in Tübingen and to strengthen the scientific environment for this topic.
