Friedrich Wilhelm Hesse (* 1948 in Geseke ) is a German psychologist . He is the founding director of the Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media in Tübingen and head of the “Knowledge Exchange” working group. He was also Scientific Vice President of the Leibniz Association (2010–2018).

Life

After studying psychology at the universities of Marburg and Düsseldorf , he worked between 1976 and 1982 as a research assistant at the institutes for psychology at the University of Düsseldorf and the RWTH Aachen . At RWTH Aachen University he received his doctorate in 1979. phil. From 1982 to 1983 he was a Research Fellow at the Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC) at the University of Pittsburgh and at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (USA). From 1983 to 1990 he taught as an academic advisor at the Institute for Psychology at the University of Göttingen , where he also completed his habilitation (Dr. rer. Nat. Habil.).

Since 1990 he has been a professor at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . From 1993 to 2000 he was head of the department for applied cognitive psychology at the German Institute for Distance Learning Research (DIFF) in Tübingen. From 1995 to 1997 he was also director of the European Laboratory Association LERANT (Laboratoire Européen de Recherche sur les Apprentisages et les Nouvelles Téchnologies). From 1999 to 2019 he held the chair for Applied Cognitive Psychology and Media Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Tübingen. In 2001, the Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media was founded under his leadership , and he was its director from 2001 to 2016.

Research initiatives

Hesse initiated numerous interdisciplinary research alliances for empirical educational research at the Tübingen location. From 1999 to 2008, Hesse was the initiator and spokesman of the first virtual graduate college funded by the DFG and from 2001 to 2006 of the DFG priority program "Network-based knowledge communication in groups". Since 2006 he has been the spokesman for the DFG research group “Analysis and Promotion of Effective Teaching-Learning Processes” (formerly “Orchestration of Computer-Supported Teaching-Learning Processes”).

In 2009 he initiated the nationwide first ScienceCampus , the ScienceCampus "Education in Information Environments" in Tübingen, of which he was the spokesman (2009-2016). Hesse is also a member of the steering committee of the graduate school "Learning, Educational Achievement, and Life Course Development: An Integrated Research and Training Program (LEAD)" as part of the federal government's excellence initiative.

Advisory activities

Hesse is a member of various commissions and advisory boards on educational topics. Among other things, he is a member of the scientific advisory board for vocational training research, State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI, Switzerland, a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Institute for Adult Education eV (DIE), a member of the scientific advisory board of the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society i . G. (HIIG), Berlin, Chairman of the Advisory Board E-Learning Academic Network (ELAN) eV, Chairman of the Evaluation Panel for Educational Research in Austria, Member of the Advisory Board of the Swiss Leading House on Technologies for Vocational Training and Member of the School Board of Tübingen School of Education at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. Hesse is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Training Network (ETN) established by ANIMATAS (funded by HORIZON 2020, coordinated by the University of Sorbonne, Paris), member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Center for Research on Learning and Innovation (CRLI) from the University of Sydney, Australia, Scientific Co-Chair of the Global Learning Council (GLC) and advises on the development of the research focus “Digital Higher Education” at the University of Hagen.

Hesse is a member of the editorial boards of international journals (including Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, Zeitschrift für Psychologie / Journal of Psychology, International Journal of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (ijCSCL), Journal of Computer Assisted Learning (jCAL), Technology, Instruction , Cognition and Learning (TICL)) and is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Zeitschrift für Medienpsychologie / Journal of Media Psychology.

Scientific focus

Hesse's main research interests are in the field of learning with digital media, in particular network-based knowledge communication and computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). It looks at how digital media can be used to encourage group interaction. He pays particular attention to the question of whether digital tools are able to counteract distortions in information processing (e.g. influence of majority , confirmation errors ). He is also dedicated to the question of how different group awareness approaches can contribute to improved computer-aided collaboration, and is interested in the influence of new digital tools on collaborative learning in school lessons. Since 2010, Hesse has been working increasingly on the question of how groups can learn whose cooperation is supported by the use of multi-touch screens . Much of Hesse's research deals with informal group learning , e.g. B. when using digital media in museums, libraries, or in Web 2.0 .
