The German Institute for Distance Learning Research ( DIFF ) was established in 1967 by the Volkswagenwerk Foundation as a foundation under civil law with legal capacity and existed until 2000.

tasks

The German Institute for Distance Learning Research (DIFF) at the University of Tübingen , as a scientific institute, set itself the task of helping to shape the development of learning and further education with new media through research on media-based teaching and learning. The DIFF dealt with questions of media-based teaching and learning in distance learning and in continuing academic education. His task was in particular the research, development and testing of models for teaching and learning supported by (new) media. The research work of the institute was application-oriented and multidisciplinary. The DIFF was involved in international research and development projects. The transfer of knowledge into practice was a central concern of the institute's work. For this purpose, seminars and workshops, information and advice for universities, independent educational institutions, economic institutions and politics were offered. Distance learning providers and further training providers were able to call up prototype further training offers and procedures. In 1998 the Competence Center for MultiMedia and Telematics (KMMT) was established at DIFF. The KMMT was a counseling institution that took over the transfer of multimedia and telernatic components of teaching and learning.

Institutional suspension

Until its closure in 2000, the DIFF was a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz e. V. as well as a member of the Blue List Scientific Association (WBL).

closure

Based on the recommendation of the Science Council on July 10, 1998, the DIFF was closed in 2000. The state of Baden-Württemberg was against the closure. The vacant head of the Didactic Design department at DIFF was still advertised as a professorship. Detlev Leutner, as well as the head of the Department of Applied Cognitive Science in Aachen , who did his doctorate under Karl Josef Klauer , declined the offer, the runner-up received no call.

Start-up

At the same time, the Science Council recommended the establishment of the Institute for Knowledge Media (IWM) under the direction of Friedrich Wilhelm Hesse , who was previously head of the Department of Applied Cognitive Science at DIFF. Detlev Leutner became the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the IWM. According to the proposal of the Science Council, the new institute should have an educational science department in addition to the cognitive science department, but this was not established.
