The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) ( French Office fédéral de la santé publique (OFSP) , Italian Ufficio federale della sanità pubblica (UFSP) , Romansh Uffizi federal da sanadad publica (UFSP)) is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation and belongs to the Federal Department of the interior (EDI).

The BAG is headed by Pascal Strupler and has its seat in Liebefeld (municipality of Köniz ).

Area of responsibility

The FOPH is responsible for national health policy and - together with the cantons - for promoting the health of the Swiss population. As the national authority, the FOPH also represents Switzerland in health policy matters in international organizations and vis-à-vis other countries.

The BAG's area of responsibility is correspondingly broad. The BAG advocates a healthy lifestyle for the population and an efficient health system . For example, the BAG is responsible for social health and accident insurance , it plans and implements the national programs to combat addictive behavior and communicable diseases, and takes care of the prevention of non-communicable diseases and radiation protection .

history

It all started with the Federal Sanitary Commission, which worked between 1879 and 1882. Under the leadership of Federal Councilor Karl Schenk and Vice-President Jakob Laurenz Sonderegger , the Federal Council's message on the establishment and measures to prevent and combat epidemics that are dangerous to the public was first drawn up on December 18, 1879. From 1889, Johann Friedrich Schmid became the first official responsible exclusively for health issues and in 1893 the first director of the Federal Health Office with two other employees. In the 1960s this became the Federal Office of Public Health for a short time.

criticism

The Federal Office of Public Health was awarded a negative prize at the Big Brother Awards 2019 because of the electronic patient record.
