The Mae Nam Moei ( Thai : แม่น้ำ เมย ; "Moei River") is a tributary of the Saluen . It forms the border between the Thai province of Tak and the Kayin state in Myanmar (Burma). The Moei rises in the province of Tak in the district ( Amphoe ) Phop Phra . In its upper reaches it is called Wa Le and initially flows from northeast to southwest. After a loop it continues to flow in a north-northwest direction. Its meandering course is also evident in the equally shaped course of the Burmese-Thai border. It flows into the Saluen in the Sop Moei district of the Thai province of Mae Hong Son .

The Moei is 327 kilometers long. On the Thai side it borders on the Mae Sot and Tha Song Yang districts of the Tak Province, on the Myanmar side on the Dooplaya and Pa'an districts of the Kayin state. In the past, battles between the Myanmar government, the Karen National Union , the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army and the Thai army took place on its banks . Karen refugee camps are located on the banks of the Moei . The river is ruled by smugglers at night. In Mae Sot the river is spanned by the Friendship Bridge. There is an official border crossing between Thailand and Myanmar. There are also numerous illegal border crossings into the area of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army.
