Jacques Berthelet

Jacques Berthelet CSV (born October 24, 1934 in Montréal , Québec , Canada ; † January 25, 2019 ) was a Canadian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil .

Life

Born in Montréal in 1934, Berthelet attended the École supérieure Saint-Viateur in Montréal and the Collège Saint-Viateur in Outremont. He studied Catholic theology at the Scholastikat Saint-Charles in Joliette and at the University of Freiburg im Üechtland (Switzerland), where he also received a licentiate in theology.

On August 1, 1957, he joined the Viatorist Congregation for Clergy , made perpetual vows on August 15, 1961 , and was ordained a priest on June 16, 1962 .

After teaching at the University of Montréal's theological faculty for five years , he was Vicar General in Rome from 1972 to 1978 and then from 1978 to 1984 Superior Provincial in Montréal. On August 26, 1984, he was elected superior general of his community.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Lamsorti and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil on December 19, 1986 . The episcopal ordination donated him on March 21, 1987 Bishop Bernard Hubert in the cathedral of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Valleyfield , Robert Lebel , and the Bishop of the Diocese of Saint-Jérôme , Charles-Omer Valois .

After Hubert's death on February 2, 1996, Berthelet was appointed diocesan administrator and on December 27, 1996 by John Paul II appointed fourth bishop of the diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil, which he took possession of on January 25, 1997. Pope Benedict XVI accepted his age-related resignation on October 28, 2010.

During the term from 2001 to 2003 he was chairman of the Canadian Bishops' Conference .
