The University of Montreal (French Université de Montréal , abbreviated UdeM) was founded in 1878 and is a French-speaking university and one of four universities in Montréal . The current university president is Guy Breton . Around 45,000 students in 13 faculties and over 60 departments study here every year. Two schools are affiliated with the university: the École Polytechnique engineering school and the HEC Montréal business school . The Center hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal hospital network is also affiliated .

Their motto is Fide splendet et scientia . The budget for 2006 was 899.5 million Canadian dollars. It is the largest research university in the province of Québec and the second largest in Canada. The university has three campuses that are spread across the city.
