Hubert Reeves , CC , OQ (born July 13, 1932 in Montreal ) is a Canadian atomic and astrophysicist and popular science author.

biography

Reeves studied physics at the University of Montreal after attending the Collège Jean de Brébeuf from 1950 to 1953 . In 1955 he earned a master's degree in atomic physics from McGill University under John David Jackson and received his doctorate in astrophysics from Cornell University under Edwin Salpeter in 1960 .

From 1960 to 1964 Reeves taught physics as an assistant professor at the Université de Montréal . He was also a consultant to the Institute for Space Studies of NASA and taught at Columbia University . Then he was professor of atomic physics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles . In 1965 he became director of the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in Paris and scientific advisor to the Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique in Saclay.

Reeves worked scientifically on the thermonuclear processes inside stars and the formation of light elements such as helium, lithium, beryllium and boron. With numerous books and films, he contributed to the popularization of the knowledge of astronomy and cosmology.

In addition to several honorary doctorates, Reeves u. a. the Petrie Prize Lecture (1981), the Prize of the Fondation de France (1982) and the Société française de physique (1985) as well as the Albert Einstein Medal (2001) and the Prix ​​Jules-Janssen (1991). He became Knight of the Ordre national du Mérite (1976), Knight (1985) and Commander (2003) of the Légion d'Honneur and Officer (1991) and Compagnon (2003) of the Ordre du Canada .

In addition to his scientific work, Reeves is also active in the field of environmental protection, u. a. as president of the Ligue ROC pour la préservation de la faune sauvage and member of Terre d'avenir and France Nature Environnement .
