Gerald William Wiesner

Gerald William Wiesner OMI (born June 25, 1937 in Denzil ) is former bishop of Prince George .

Life

Gerald William Wiesner joined the congregation of the Huenfeld Oblates and was ordained a priest on February 23, 1963 . After further studies, he obtained a licentiate in theology from Saint Paul University in Ottawa .

From 1964 he taught as a theology professor at the Scholastic in Battleford , Saskatchewan , and from 1972 in Edmonton . During this time he was also involved in the training of the next generation of the Order.

From 1972 to 1984 and again from 1991 Wiesner also taught at Newman Theological College, of which he was acting president for a short time in 1992. During this time he also took on duties in the parish pastoral care in Edmonton. During this time he was one of the initiators of faith courses to introduce adults to the Christian faith.

In 1984 he went to Saskatoon as Provincial of his Order Province . He held this office until 1990.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Prince George on October 6, 1992 . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Vancouver , Adam Joseph Exner OMI, on February 22 of the next year; Co- consecrators were Henri Légaré OMI, Archbishop of Grouard-McLennan , and Joseph Neil MacNeil , Archbishop of Edmonton .

In November 1997 Wiesner was a delegate of the Canadian Bishops' Conference at the Synod of Bishops for America in Rome. From October 1999 he was chairman of the Bishops' Conference for two years.

On January 3, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
