Joseph Neil MacNeil

Joseph Neil MacNeil (born April 15, 1924 in Sydney , Nova Scotia , † February 11, 2018 in Edmonton ) was a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Edmonton .

Life

Joseph Neil MacNeil, eldest of three children, studied at Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish (Bachelor of Arts) and entered the Diocesan Seminary in Halifax in 1944, studying theology and philosophy. He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Antigonish on May 23, 1948 and was active as a pastor in Nova Scotia. At the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas ("Angelicum") in Rome , MacNeil completed a doctorate in canon law . In 1959 he became Apostolic Administrator of the Antigonish Diocese. He was pastor at Saint Ninian's Cathedral in Antigonish and was a professor at Saint Francis Xavier University.

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Saint John, New Brunswick on April 9, 1969 . The Bishop of Antigonish, William Edward Power , ordained him episcopal on June 24 of that year ; Co- consecrators were James Martin Hayes , Archbishop of Halifax , and Alfred Bertram Leverman , Former Bishop of Saint John, New Brunswick. His episcopal motto was Crescamus In Christum (Epistle of Paul to the Ephesians 4:16).

On July 2, 1973, he was named Archbishop of Edmonton . In 1984 MacNeil helped organize Pope John Paul II's visit to Edmonton. On June 7, 1999, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

While serving as a bishop, he studied economics at the University of Chicago . He received an honorary doctorate in law from St. Francis Xavier University (1978), Saint Thomas University , Fredericton, New Brunswick (1980) and the University of Alberta , Edmonton (1982).

Joseph Neil MacNeil died of a stroke in February 2018.
