James Martin Hayes

James Martin Hayes (born May 27, 1924 in Halifax ; † August 2, 2016 ibid) was a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Halifax .

Life

James Martin Hayes was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Halifax on June 15, 1947 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 5, 1965 titular bishop of Reperi and auxiliary bishop in Halifax. The Apostolic Delegate in Canada , Archbishop Sergio Pignedoli , donated him episcopal ordination on April 20 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Albert Leménager , Bishop of Yarmouth , and Alfred Bertram Leverman , Bishop of Saint John, New Brunswick . In the same year he was a participant in the last session of the Second Vatican Council . On June 22, 1967 he was by Paul VI. appointed Archbishop of Halifax.

From 1987 to 1989 he was President of the Canadian Bishops' Conference .

On November 6, 1990, Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation. Afterwards, Hayes was involved in pastoral care for the sick and dying in a palliative center in Halifax until 2012. He died in a Halifax hospital in August 2016.
