Faith course

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A faith course introduces the Christian faith in a manageable time frame. Depending on the conception, no or only very little knowledge of the Christian faith is required. In addition to imparting knowledge of the faith, it is often about dealing with central questions of life and concrete experiences of Christian life in a congregation or community. The names for courses of this type are inconsistent: In addition to the faith course, terms such as basic faith course or Bible course are used for introductory and in-depth courses.

development

In the Reformation churches, Martin Luther's little catechism stands for the transmission of the faith in schools and families. It can be seen as the original cell of a course of faith. Since the middle of the 20th century, various Western countries have been experimenting with courses in faith in different denominations in order to respond to the increasing secularization of society and an accompanying decrease in knowledge of the Christian faith. At first these courses were aimed at adults. However, in the course of development, special offers for special target groups such as young people or repatriates were created.

distribution

Today there is an almost unmanageable range of courses with different orientations. Especially in the free church and evangelical area, new courses are constantly being developed, most of which experience regional significance. In the German-speaking area there are currently " The Alpha Course ", " Cursillo ", "SPUR8" (formerly: "Become a Christian - Remain Christian"), "Stages of Life", "Emmaus" and the " Paths of Adult Faith " (WeG) the most widely used courses.

There is a noticeable increase in the number of faith courses offered within the large Christian churches. In 2011 , the Evangelical Church in Germany launched the "Adult Belief" project to promote courses in faith . It can be assumed that faith courses will become a standard offer of religious education in the Christian churches.
