Amphoe Mae Sot ( Thai : อำเภอ แม่สอด ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) of the Tak Province . The Tak Province is located in the northern region of Thailand . The district capital is also called Mae Sot .
location
Mae Sot is located about 80 kilometers west of the provincial capital Tak on the border with Burma . The main river in the county is the Maenam Moei (Moei River).
traffic
Here the Asian Highway AH1 connects Thailand and Burma, after the Three Pagoda Pass it is the most important border crossing into Burma. In 1997 the "Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge" (Thai-Burmese Friendship Bridge) was completed. There is a customs clearance point at the bridge.
Mae Sot also has its own airport , the IATA airport code is MAQ. At the moment (November 2009) there is no passenger air traffic to and from Mae Sot.
economy
Trade with Burma in particular contributes to Mae Sot's economic performance; it serves in part as a supply point for the Karen resistance movement in the Burmese border region. Due to the poor economic situation in Burma, there is mainly barter : basketry, woodwork, jade for food, motorcycles and electronics.

Local administration
Mae Sot (Thai: เทศบาล นคร แม่สอด ) is a large city ( Thesaban Nakhon ) in the district, it consists of the entire Tambon Mae Sot.
There are also three small towns ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:
- Tha Sai Luat ( เทศบาล ตำบล ท่า สาย ลวด ) consists of parts of the Tambon Tha Sai Luat.
- Mae Ku ( เทศบาล ตำบล แม่ กุ ) consists of parts of the Tambon Mae Ku,
- Mae Tao ( เทศบาล ตำบล แม่ ตา ว ) consists of parts of the Tambon Mae Tao.
There are also nine "Tambon Administrative Organizations" (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - administrative organizations) for the tambon in the district that do not belong to any city.
