Karl Schlögl (born January 28, 1955 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). Schlögl was active in politics for around 40 years before resigning his last political office as mayor of the Lower Austrian municipality of Purkersdorf on October 31, 2018 . Previously, he was a member of the Federal Council , a member of the National Council , State Secretary in the Federal Chancellery , Minister of the Interior , Lower Austrian regional party chairman of the SPÖ and for a few months also Deputy Governor of Lower Austria.

Life

Karl Schlögl spent the first years of his life in Pyhra and moved to Purkersdorf when he was five.

Political and professional career

Karl Schlögl began his political career in 1989 as mayor in Purkersdorf. He remained so until he was appointed to the government by Franz Vranitzky . From 6 April 1995 to 28 January 1997, he was Secretary of State in the Federal Chancellery in the federal governments Vranitzky IV and Vranitzky V . Initially he was State Secretary for the public service , from October 27, 1995 also for Europe , from March 12, 1996 he was also responsible for sport . He worked in the cabinet of Federal Chancellor Klima from 1997 to February 4, 2000.

After the end of the SPÖ / ÖVP coalition, Karl Schlögl became mayor of Purkersdorf again on May 2, 2000 . After the resignation of Johann Bauer, he moved up as the new Deputy Governor of Lower Austria on October 5, 2000, after having held the state party chairmanship of the SPÖ since November 21, 1998. On April 19, 2001 he resigned from this position and on May 5, 2001 also resigned from his position as state party leader. Then he went into the private sector. In the mayoral elections in Purkersdorf in 2005, Schlögl was again successful. In 2010 his party was again elected as the strongest representation in the local council with 63.2% of the vote. From 2004 to 2011 Schlögl was a member of the supervisory board of Novomatic  AG, one of the largest integrated gaming groups in the world. At the end of 2008 he was appointed to the supervisory board of the Lower Austrian HYPO Investmentbank .

Time as Minister of the Interior

During the time when Karl Schlögl was Minister of the Interior, there were a number of spectacular criminal cases. Among other things, the letter bomb attacks, where some prominent Austrians such as Helmut Zilk were sent letter bombs. In 1998 it was possible to clear up this series of attacks and convict Franz Fuchs as the perpetrator.

Between 1997 and 2000, the Ministry of the Interior had the highest number of employees and a budget that allowed for extensive investments. During this period, DNA analysis was also introduced in investigations.

The Marcus Omofuma case also fell during Schlögl's tenure as Minister of the Interior . Schlögl received criticism - also from his own party. He was accused of having known about illegal practices and of protecting those responsible who were later convicted. In this case, Schlögl received support from the FPÖ and the Kronen Zeitung . Schlögl's role in the controversial police operation Operation Spring was also discussed a lot .

Karl Schlögl is since 1991 member of the volunteer fire department Purkersdorf with the rank extinguishing champion . When he reached the age of 65, he was transferred to the reserve on January 28, 2020.
