Juliane Gertrude Bogner Strauss , also Bogner-Strauss (* 3. November 1971 in Wagna , Styria as Juliane Gertrude Strauss ) is a Austrian molecular biologist , biochemist and politician ( ÖVP ). She was Federal Minister for Women, Families and Youth in the Federal Chancellery and, from May 22, 2019, was additionally entrusted with the management of the Federal Ministry for Public Service and Sport . From November 9, 2017 to January 22, 2018 she was a member of the Austrian National Council , and on June 5, 2019 she was a member again. Since December 17, 2019, she has been state councilor in the state government of Schützenhöfer II .

Life

After elementary school in Gamlitz, Juliane Bogner-Strauss attended the Ursuline Grammar School in Graz , where she graduated in 1990 . From 1992 she studied chemistry at the University of Graz , graduating in 1999 as a Magistra. This was followed by a doctoral degree at the Institute for Molecular Biosciences at the University of Graz, where she did her doctorate with Rudolf Zechner in 2002 and then worked as a university assistant until 2005. 2005 she became an assistant professor at the Technical University of Graz at the Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics , where she in 2008 in the field of genomics and molecular biology habilitated and in 2010 associate professor and deputy head of the institute. In October 2013 she became associate professor and deputy director at the Institute of Biochemistry.

Since June 2018 she has been the patron of the Strong Women initiative, which was founded in 2017 . Strong hearts. for education about cardiovascular diseases .

She is married to Erik Bogner and has two children of her own and a stepson.

politics

In the 2017 National Council election , she ran as a career changer for the Styrian People's Party on third place on the state list. From November 9, 2017 to January 22, 2018, she was a member of the Austrian National Council .

From December 18, 2017 she was a member of the Federal Government Kurz I as Federal Minister for Families and Youth of the Republic of Austria , from January 8, 2018 she was Federal Minister for Women, Families and Youth in the Federal Chancellery . Josef Smolle succeeded her in the National Council on January 24, 2018 . At the beginning of February 2018 it was announced that she would not sign the women's referendum 2.0 . For them, the reduction in working hours to 30 hours and the nationwide gender quota of 50 percent at all levels would go too far.

From July 9 to August 26, 2018, she was in charge of representing the Federal Minister for Sustainability and Tourism Elisabeth Köstinger , as she took parental leave for six weeks after the birth of her child .

She has been a member of the Styrian VP Employees' Association since October 2017 and a member of the Styrian VP Women since November 2017. At the meeting of the national board of ÖVP women on June 8, 2018, Juliane Bogner-Strauss was proposed as the successor to Dorothea Schittenhelm as federal leader, the proposal was unanimously accepted. The election as federal head of the ÖVP women took place in the Bundestag on November 10, 2018.

From May 22 to June 3, 2019, she was also entrusted with the management of the Federal Ministry for Public Service and Sport . In June 2019 she accepted her mandate again, Josef Smolle left the National Council. At the beginning of July 2019, she succeeded Barbara Wolfgang-Krenn, who died in April 2019, as women's spokeswoman in the ÖVP parliamentary club .

In the 2019 National Council election, she ran as the ÖVP's top candidate in Styria and sixth on the ÖVP federal list. As part of the coalition negotiations for the formation of a government in 2019 , she is negotiating in the main group Social Security, New Justice and Combating Poverty. On December 17, 2019, she was elected regional councilor of the Schützenhöfer II regional government in Styria, where she is responsible for the health and education sectors. Josef Smolle succeeded her National Council mandate after Martina Kaufmann switched from the state list to the basic mandate in Graz. Elisabeth Pfurtscheller succeeded her as women’s spokesperson .
