The Federal Ministry for Families and Youth was responsible for Austrian family and youth policy. It was re-established on March 1, 2014 and took over its agendas from the former Federal Ministry for Economy, Family and Youth . The Family Ministry previously existed from 1983 to 1987.

history

From 1966 onwards, family policy was part of the Federal Chancellery , where Elfriede Karl was appointed State Secretary in 1971 . The youth agendas, on the other hand, were largely handled by the Ministry of Education , but there was no formal responsibility. De facto, youth policy was largely dictated by the Federal Youth Council . The first Austrian family ministry (already with youth agendas ) was created in 1983 by Fred Sinowatz and originally also included consumer protection . However, it was dissolved again in 1987 and the family and youth agendas moved to the Ministry of the Environment . In 2000 they were handed over to the Ministry of Social Affairs, which now operated as the Federal Ministry for Social Security and Generations . In 2007 the family / youth department moved to the Ministry of Health and only one year later to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In 2014 - 2018 there was again an independent ministry for families and youth, then the agendas were overseen by a minister for the Chancellery . A Federal Ministry for Labor, Family and Youth has existed since 2020 .
