General questions of family policy were first standardized in 1966 as the responsibility of the Federal Chancellery , from 1971 the later Family Minister Elfriede Karl was State Secretary in the Chancellery, among other things for family issues . An amendment to the Federal Ministries Act in 1979, the Minister of Finance in addition to matters of was equalization of family burdens for the general family policy , in particular the Family Policy Advisory Board and the Family Counseling promoting responsible. In this context, State Secretary Karl moved to the Ministry of Finance.
A separate family ministry has existed, established by Sinowatz, since January 1, 1984, and for most of the time it was called Family and Youth. Initially managed with consumer protection, from 1987 it was combined with environmental protection. In 1995/96, under Franz Vranitzky , there was briefly a purely family ministry, then they returned to the previous form. 2000–2007, the portfolio was named Generations by Wolfgang Schüssel , because the interests of the elderly and the intergenerational balance were to be strengthened, and it came to the Ministry of Social Affairs. Alfred Gusenbauer returned to the original name and handed the affairs over to the Ministry of Health, Werner Faymann to the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2009. In 2014, however, he reinstalled a family ministry. Sebastian Kurz brought family matters back to the Federal Chancellery in 2018.
