The Sports Minister of the Republic of Austria is the Federal Minister responsible for sports policy in Austria . The Federal Chancellor took over the agendas in person, in some cases there was a separate State Secretary for Sport . Sports agendas are currently the responsibility of the Federal Ministry for Public Service and Sport .

The Austrian sports department

1917 to 1945

Was responsible for the sport of ancient times, the Education and Culture Ministry , in 1917 the Emperor I. Karl installed Ministry of Social Affairs . At that time it was about military sports education , as had already been determined in the agendas: "Area of activity of the Ministry for Social Welfare : [...] Participation in the fundamental matters of physical fitness of young people and their training for military strength".
There was then an explicit "Sports Minister" briefly during the period of Austrofascism , when Ernst Rüdiger Starhemberg , former Heimwehr leader , was entrusted by Schuschnigg (1st Cabinet) as Vice Chancellor with the objective management of matters of physical fitness (May 17, 1934 - October 17, 1935 and October 29, 1935 - May 14, 1936). After the dissolution of the protective leagues, state paramilitary early education was to be promoted, analogous to the Hitler Youth - but with an energetic distance from the National Socialists and a rejection of the Führer cult.

Since 1945

According to Article 15 of the Federal Constitutional Act, sport agendas in the Second Republic are constitutionally the responsibility of the federal states .

Sport was first mentioned by law in 1966 as a matter for the Federal Ministry of Education . Fred Sinowatz stepped into the public eye for the first time in his capacity as Minister of Sports in the 1970s.

In the Sinowatz government (1983–1986), sports matters became an independent portfolio (as of January 1, 1985: Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Sport ), so Herbert Moritz was the first official sports minister . The focus was therefore on promoting school sports and early sports education for more exercise for children and young people.

With the increasing importance of mass and top-class sports for tourism in Austria , the department gained increasing importance.
On February 1, 1991, the section separated from the Ministry of Education and came to the Ministry of Health , i.e. with a focus on general sports and public health. 1995–2000 and 2003–2007 a state secretary was responsible for sport as state secretary in the Federal Chancellery , after Austria's accession to the
EU in 1995 the common sporting policy of the European Union was added to the portfolio.

Since 2009, the sports department has been based at the Ministry of Defense . The reason was also that many Austrian competitive athletes come from military sports , where they have a professional livelihood after their sports career, so that there is a closer connection.

By January 8, 2018, it was with the department for public service as a federal Department of Public Service and Sport re-formed and added to the Vice Chancellor.

The authority (sports section, sports ministry)

The institutions responsible for sports form a section, the sports section , which has been explicitly called the Ministry of Sports since 2009 .

The location is the House of Sports in Vienna-Wieden  (4th), Prinz-Eugen-Straße. In addition, nine regional sports directorates have been set up. The agendas are especially competitive sports and sports in tourism . The Ministry of Education (Dept. II / 8 BMB - Exercise and Sport ) continues to be responsible for school sport and the promotion of physical activity, and the Ministry of Science is responsible for university and college sport ( University Sport and Universiaden Office ).
